I don't know about worm grunting but in the woods around here are little brown birds that will drum their feet on the dry leaves and dirt and it sounds exactly like it is raining. I watch them and they usually only do it a few moments, grab at something in the dirt and move to a new spot a few feet away. I think they are luring insects or worms by imitating rain. One of these days I'll have my camera with me and video it. It's cool to watch.
I was digging a HUGE hole to bury my poor goat a couple of weeks ago and as I was digging big ole night crawlers were coming up out of the ground everywhere. Around the hole, not from the hole. My duck was having a great time slurping them down as they emerged!
