This 1 Ton Crocodile still holds record as world's largest; I was in the exhibit of one that weighed in at 1,700 lbs (known to many as Gomek); anyone know of a bigger one? http://bitly.com/ThOgC1

Wow. It's hard to wrap your brain around a reptile that size, even if it is a salty. Amazing!

Thanks, yes; I had seen many giant reptiles, from anacondas to leatherbacks in the wild, and worked with some sizable crocs, but being close to a 17 ft, 1,700 pounder shocked me; this latest catch is almost beyond belief! I need to see some of those gnu-hunters in Africa! Best, Frank

Watched the docu the other night, truly a monster croc.
Plus they reckon there is a even bigger one in the area this one was caught

The video of the giant croc being fed on this page: http://bitly.com/ThOgC1 is amazing. What if it gets tired of being teased out of the water with a morsel of fowl? The spectators would be treated to a real show...

Hi All,

Thanks for the feedback; Here's a note plus photo of my visit with the now deceased Gomek http://bitly.com/K5hRyl - a huge Saltie who wound up at St Augustine Alligator Farm, after a storied history (once owned by Arthur Jones, nautalis inventor, animal collecter and quite a character). I was working at Bx Zoo at the time, and Gomek's keeper took me into the exhibit. Hard to describe. He lived mainly on nutria, an introduced rodent that was very easy to trap. I'll put up better photos when I can get them together. Best, Frank

in any event the stick he held would fend off an attack...... the keeper commented to me that it was “…amazing how folks believed that a broomstick would be of any use against a 17 foot-long-croc”!
LOL Yeah, I don't know that having a stick would have made me feel any more comfortable. Sort of like taking a BB gun on a bear hunt. Neat story, though. Amazing animal.

Thanks!...Yes - "don't take a knife to a gunfight!".

You reminded me - I once accidentally released a 1,000+ lb Kodiak bear at the zoo (don't try this at home, as they say). I got out of the building and bear was contained within, but out of his cage(zoo was closed, early AM) and I sounded the alarm. NYDP was first to arrive; I told the officer that the building door would not hold up should the bear crash into it. He patted his weapon and said "don't worry". Just then the bear's head appeared at a window. The officer looked at his weapon and said "#@#@%...this would only piss him off"! Luckily, we were able to dart the bear (and I was able to retain my job!). Best, Frank

ROFL No doubt! I can only imagine the look on his face!
My father (Great White Hunter) and an extended family member (Professional Hunting Guide) were rafting on an Alaskan River and happened to encounter a Great Brown in some shallows. Ummm, these two 'experienced' hunters had packed their weapons away to keep them dry... My dad pulled a Sidney Poitier in Shoot to Kill (>>waving arms wildly, screaming idiotically<<) while his friend scrambled for a weapon. I guess my dad's antics were too much for Silvertip and it left without further ado. Life and times... LOL

I remember Gomek! He was a highlight of family visits to St. Augustine years back. A truly awesome creature...I have a hard time imagining a beast with an additional 4+ feet.

Glad I struck a cord...my head would have exploded had I seen him as a child - was shocking enough as an experienced adult!
