Wood Beetle!

Look at this beauty, anyone know anything about them? Do they acutally "eat" the wood or just gnaw through it?
I love when she makes noises, it sounds like she huffing and puffing.

Looks like a Bess beetle, Odontotaenius disjunctus.

You'd prob have to rummage through sci pdfs to see what it is they actually eat while chewing through wood. Ime and from what I have read, they are pretty communal. I've rarely come across one loner while looking through rotting wood. There is prob still a lot to learn about what goes on in the darkness in bess beetle tunnels in rotting wood.
