Hello all,
I caught a large wild snail yesterday and intend to keep him/her/them as a pet. I've always loved snails and wanted a pet one, but I also want to obey the nationwide (U.S.) ban on importing them or shipping them across state lines. So my wild friend is my solution. I have him set up in a small tank with compost soil, sphagnum moss, and climbing branches, and he's been exploring today.
I'm very curious as to what species he is, and hopefully giving some details here will help identify him. He was found on a farm in North Carolina after a rainy day, crawling up the bole of a tree. He's unusually large for an NC snail, just under the size of a quarter. His shell is brown with a slightly raised whorl, and some depressions run along the back and top of his shell, although I don't know if these are natural markings or the result of some injury. He has a visible pneumostome (a new word to me haha) or breathing pore above his body, which is black. I'm posting some pictures which should clarify my description.
My cautious identification of him, done after some Googling and consulting a guide to snails of the Great Smoky Mountains, is that he is a Mesomphix cupreus or copper button snail. I'm quite likely wrong though, so if anyone can correct me or give a better ID, I would appreciate it!
