Sometimes it is still cheaper when you consider that you don't have to pay for shipping@!

I haven't purchased a T online yet. I prefer examining the critter firsthand before I buy, but online deals are very tempting. There's more species available than what can be purchased locally, so that's a plus for online shopping, and online recommendations from happy customers help buyers choose reputable dealers.

We will be purchising some T's online...mail actually, whatever, for the first time in a few weeks. While yes, there is the s/h to consider, the total price of the 5 we are going to get, including s/h is about $91...a whole lot cheaper than what you'd pay for one subadult B. smithi in the local pet store. Plus, the dealer knows these t's, and provides any and all info needed for their care, as well as a personal esscment (sp) of their temperments and habits. However, sometimes you can find a real good deal at a pet store, although it's rare...at least around here.

Conway you need to understand that to guarantee live delivery of a sling you must pay around $25 dollars..now figure that into the cost of what a pet store T costs. Also if we don't frequent our local pet stores and keep them in business then we have no place to buy crickets and such. Also most of the pet stores will lower the prices for good , regular customers.

I got my first 5 t's from pet stores, but they were all sold at good prices and all of the tarantulas were in great condition. I've also bought quite a few from the internet and shipping (and taxes in some areas) can be pretty expensive. I say whatever the best deal is go for it if the t is healthy.

I'd love the chance to buy a T at a shop, but in my area I know of only 2 shops where it might be possibe. Both however only had 1 Grammostola rosea each. Lopez might know more.

Theres far more choice on the net.

i think its cruel to ship T's unless its the only option i can get what i want, plus add 20-30 bucks shipping and your paying alot more on the net then at a petshop think about it.

I agree with that to a degree, but after everything I've seen in pet stores that sell "exotics" and have uneducated staff who don't even know what the name of the critter in the tank is and are deathly afraid to come close to it, much less touch it. And after seeing WAY too many dead or half dead T's because the workers are too afraid to even put a hand in there to give them water....I'd rather aquire my T's from someone who knows them and at least isn't afraid to come into the same room with them. I'd rather pay a higher price for a T and know that I'm going to get it alive and healthy and have the option of returning it if it's not. Pet stores don't give refunds on dead animals.

Proper shipping of a tarantula puts them in a very secure soft almost cacoon. I really don't agree that it is cruel at all. IF packed properly they are snug and secure and mostly delivered over night....I find this way more agreeable than the terrible conditions they are found in at most pet stores. The other plus side is generally you are buying from someone that is actually knowledgeable and really cares about the critters they ship. Most of these dealers are not in it to become super rich..they like and care about what they are doing.

My local pet store usually has a pretty good selection of t's but they're usually the more docile species. They have 2 people that work there that are in no way afraid of the tarantulas but they do respect them and care for them very well. I wouldn't buy a t from a pet store if it wasn't healthy or I thought the pet store was not clean or if they treated their animals poorly. They even said they could order me t's of just about any species if I like and they'd give me a good deal on them. My 3.75" A. versicolor only cost me 65 dollars and they sold me my B. smithi that was about 2.5" at the time for 30 dollars.

I buy 'single' animals from petstores, the shipping costs make that a smart move. When I buy multiple animals I go online, my next order (~$400) will be split between two dealers and at least one of them provides free shipping at the dollar amount I'm spending. Would you really spend $7 on an Usambara sling and then add $25 for shipping for it?
