I'm going to get straight to the heart breaking, tear and pain causing point -

Porter is (for all intents and purposes)... dead.
(For anyone who doesn't know the story - A. minatrix is my favourite Avic. I had a sling, Mimi, die of "DKS" some months back. I was ecstatic when my mum offered to buy me another one as an early birthday present. That's where Porter comes in...)

I don't even know what to say. I feel sick to my stomach.

WHY does this keep happening?

She was a little 'off' from the start...
I thought maybe it was just "shipping shock"... but, she never really recovered.
I thought maybe it was just pre-moult that was causing her difficulty climbing.

I came home tonight to find her vertical amongst her plants.
Almost like she wanted to molt. I was excited!

But then, an hour passed...

and two...

and four...

With no movement and no progress, I gently brushed the hairs on one of her legs to see if I could illicit any sort of response...

Nothing.

Another half hour...

I decided an ICU was in order.
Warm, moist paper towels and a small water bowl.
Moving her into it... no response.

Nothing. :(

She'll remain there over night.
I am holding to the "It's not dead until it smells or molds" theory and...
and...
and what?

I am at a complete loss for words.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. Being a noob, I can't imagine why a healthy looking T would die out of nowhere like that. Could Porter have just been old enough to die of old age?

Sorry for your loss :(
Another case of SADS it seems with no reason or explanation for your loss.

Aw shucks. Sorry to hear this. I wish there was something I could do to help, it seems like you've had some bad luck lately.

I hear avic slings can be problematic even for the most experienced keepers at times. I like minatrixes also, and I can understand how you feel about the loss.

Really sorry to hear that. Porter was your A. Minatrix right? If so, I am even more sorry. I can only imagine what that spider meant to you. If I had one (and I will), it would be right up there with my Versicolor on my favorite list. How big was he/she when it died? I get the impression it was just a sling. Again, sorry that you had not just one of your spiders die, but your favorite spider die.

That's too bad, Jairi, I'm sorry to hear that.

We've had the same luck with our Avics, actually the sitting on its branch vertically without moving is the exact same thing that happened to our first A. avic. We didn't even notice it was dead until it started to go moldy. And same with our A. amazonica, it just was laying on the bottom not moving, and we tried the ICU, but we knew that the ICU was a long shot and it wasn't really going to do much. I hope the little guy pulls through with the ICU.

Thanks for the support yall... I feel so helpless, it's ridiculous :(

There is no improvement today... she is still in the same position, and unresponsive.

*sigh*

Definately not the first thing I like to read after a very screwed up day....... :( :( :(

So sorry for your loss, Jairi. Hopefully the little guy will pull through, but this sounds quite like the first C. fasciatum I was sent. It was damn near dead when I got it, and never pulled through. Whether it was shipping shock or carelessness on the part of the seller for sending me a sick one, I'll never know......

Hopelessness is such a despotic state to be in, and for that I truly empathize with you.

Thanks Steve

I don't want to place blame anywhere since I have absolutely no idea what was wrong with her... I just know that I, apparently, couldn't do anything about it :(

Jairi,
Avics just sometimes die for no reason.....it is not your fault so stop blaming yourself. You did everything that could be done.
We get a lot of avic deaths over here and it is just put down to SADS....which is really not good enough for me....there must be some reason.
That is why I won't keep them.....break my heart if I lost one....and there is a fair chance I would, through no fault of my own.
