For me at least, when I first learned about false widows it was a book about spiders, when I was 7 or 8 years old. I had never seen one of these things. Flash forward to 2024, Im 31 years old and my house is filled with these guys. I dont know how it happened, it used to be all the common house spider (Parasteatoda tepi/whatever) but over the past decade or so the normal house spiders have been pushed out by the Steatoda. Does anyone have any theories on the cause of this recent population bloom of them?

I guess it depends where you live.
Steatoda would have a weight advantage over cellar spiders. My houses cellar spiders are just exploding in population like the occasional fruit flies that keep appearing are feeding them . Steatoda I think I’ve seen before it’s been ages ago.

I just noticed a huge bloom in their population here this year, I'd never seen them before I found the 2 in my garage and now they're pretty much everywhere I look. I have no clue what caused it either.

Conditions must be right... Factors such as plentiful food supply, opportunity, a Niche to be filled,
Climate, the list goes on and on.
Nature is dynamic and always changing.
