She had been digging under her hide excessively to the point where it was starting to fall down into the hole so I was going to move the rock hide to prevent this from happening and I nudged her gently from the back as I do to guide her into my hand but this time just to guide her away from the area i wanted to place the rock hide (ps I don't push her. I just touch her and she walks forward) . She raised her abdomen REALLY high and started to produce threads. I've never seen her do this before. What was this about? The only thing i can come up with that maybe she thought it was time to mate? I don't know lol

It has nothing to do with being ready to mate.

It's a tarantula and they do "weird" things quite often.

yeah she doesn't really kick hairs though. she's done that twice and I've had her for a year now. And when she kicked hairs she didn't really raise her abdomen much. Like this time it was ridiculously high. I didn't even know it could go that high. Her body was at about a 75 degree angle.

And what about the producing thread? She does that SOMETIMES when i handle her. Why would she do that?

yeah she can be quirky sometimes. Like the whole thing that started the situation. She has been digging a hole in the corner for the past week and she's only dug around once before and that only lasted a day.

It's a spider, they do that. Totally normal behavior.

Edit* Also, tarantulas don't have tails, they have spinnerets.

My G.pulchripes sling does that when she feels threatened. I let her walk across my arm one time and the entire time she had her abdomen raised. It looks funny, but in reality they do it for a reason which is to make themselves look bigger.

It's perfectly normal

Take a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRW5hPPfTPM

I know it's supposed to be a defensive gesture but it looks so ridiculous, I laugh every time.

Yes, it's a defensive gesture. Pretty funny too. My G pulchra walks like that quite often and I have seen a couple of my others do it on occasion when I had to enter their homes.

ok thanks guys that makes sense because she did posture by raising her front legs afterwards so she must have been annoyed. it just surprises me when she acts like that because 99% of the time she is so dostile. abnormally dostile for a t

They will also do that when they feel there is a threat on the ground, so nothing ruptures the abdomen or get's in the book lungs, i.e.: water, glass, etc...

The genus Xenesthis often adopt this behaviour for no reason. I have noticed Holothele also, which have no hairs to kick.

It has nothing to do with being ready to mate.

Totally agreed.

As I remember, there is a tarantula that has a defense mechanism of raising its butt. Maybe it is also trying to web up high while it is on the ground? My T's do that 24/7 :)

*chuckles* My H. lividum different that a lot when I tried to coax her out of a deli cup and into her tank. Irritating when you just want a T to move and it waves it's butt at you!
