I've been raising tarantulas for almost 10 years, and mostly feeding them crickets (with occasional variation). I want to try starting a roach colony, and don't know much about them. My first order of business is GETTING some! I've emailed 3 roach dealers and received no response after several days. Can anyone suggest where I might find someone willing to ship out early next week? Has anyone had very recent experience with a seller who they know is stocked and dependable?

I would also welcome suggestions on species. I don't want flyers or climbers, and obviously, rapid growth is a plus. Was considering discoidalis, but from a brief look through this forum, I see there are more options than I was aware of! But there is a lot to read here, and I have little free time. If I can actually get a good starter colony of SOME appropriate species, then I can search for specific posts regarding their care. I really appreciate anyone who takes the time to reply. Thanks!!

John,

Thanks for the quick response. I wasn’t really considering hissers, but like I said, I don’t have a lot of roach knowledge, and maybe I should consider them. It seems like I have heard in the past that many reptile owners are cautious about feeding hissers to their lizards because they have so much chitin, and reptiles don’t digest it well. Maybe this wouldn’t be an issue for tarantulas—I guess evolution would have equipped them with plenty of proteases to take care of that…..right? Can you (or anyone) comment on this? Also, I wonder about the growth rate. Are hissers fast, slow, or the same compared with Blaberus spp.?

In any event, if it comes down to a choice between getting hissers soon, and going through a big hassle to get something different, I will take your suggestion, and I thank you for it.

I can't comment on how they are compared to other species because they are all I have kept but I can tell you this back in december I got 7 females 3 males and a few babies and I have close to two or three hundred now they grow from nymph to adult and around tree months

Thanks. Sounds like good growth rate, John. I think I'll just get some from Mike, and contact Texas Blond for others (couldn't hurt two have 2 colonies, now, could it?). And I will keep watching the thread for more suggestions!

John,

Thanks for the tip! I called Mike. He was indeed quite friendly, and I should have some hissers by next week sometime!

I'm still looking for suggestions on what other type(s) of roaches might be good, and where I might get them.

Depending on the number of T's that you have should be a factor in deciding how many adult hissers that you should order. Adults, I would order 60 of them with a 1 to 3 male/female ratio. They'll start poping out young ones at a fair rate. At around 1 to 1.5 inches they'll make excellent feeders. The hissers will mature around 6 months. The last time I purchased any, I paid $30.00 for 20 adults including express shipping. I got mine back in the first of November and I have 400+ now. They are not the fastest breeders. They sure beat stinking crickets!!!

I have a lobster roach colony, and I got them from here james.tuttle@afc.com
and here http://www.crunchy-critters.com/

both have great prices, and ship out immediately.
Lobsters are cheap, easy to care for, breed quickly, and don't smell.
The only downside is they are glass climbers, but a thick band of vasoline around the top of the container works like a charm...

Thanks for the recomendation Immortal_sin, I do have lobster roaches available in limited numbers at the moment but I do take pre orders. If you are interested in a larger quantity or if I do not have them available on the site please email me and let me know how many you want and I'll get back to you with a price and availability as soon as I can.

I do have a safer better alternative to Vaseline available on my site if anyone is interested. Details below...
Crunchy Critters Super Slick Roach Barrier

This is a industrial food grade grease which we use to contain the lobster roaches and any other roaches that might be able to climb glass. This is intended as a superior replacement to products on the market which go by the name "Roach Guard" or "Bug Stop". This item is sold "per ounce"
1. This is a grease not a paint.
2. This is a non-toxic FDA & USDA approved grease which means it will not harm you, your insects or your pets.
3. This product will not melt, drip, freeze or gum up
4. It is water proof.
5. It goes on clear and stays clear. (Teflon based paints typically are white)
6. This product does not need to be reapplied unless you wipe it off or it gets severely dirty. One application could be your last application if you keep it clean. It stays consistently slick and does not gum up or dry up. (Paints have to be reapplied at a minimum of every 2 to 3 months and more so in high humidity environments)
7. It cost less and last longer than any paint used for the same purpose.
8. Contains no silicones
This item is sold per ounce. I have been using the same product on some of my tubs of roaches for almost 2 years. At times I sell more of the grease than my roaches. It is one of my biggest sellers.
