A G. Aureostriata would suit you well, I'd think... Hardy, sorta colorful, and uber docile... Kinda hard to find, I've found, though...

I'd recommend a GBB (C. cyanopubescens). These are EXTREMELY tough, are great eaters, and very beautiful.

They are considered terrestrial, but also do a lot of intricate webbing, which is very neat to watch (don't worry, though, most stay well out in the open where they can be seen).

Mine is a bit on the skittish side (will kick a few hairs once in awhile), but not too defensive. I wouldn't ever hold mine, but I know some people that do.

If you want color, it's going to be tough to beat this one...rich blue legs, metallic green carapace, and a bright orange abdomen....amazing!

This is mine:

G.pulchra (Brazilian Black ) are great spiders as well, They are sweet and docile. They get up to 6" or maybe a B.smithi they are docile but known to kick hairs though.

G. aureostriata is my vote. It was my first T and I couldn't have made a better choice. They are slow movers, very docile and I think are beautiful. They are brown with gold knees.

Since your brother has a G. aureostriata, I recommend you getting something different so that your family has some diversity. :)

G. rosea is nice, but if you have the money, you might want to get B. emilia, B. smithi, or something like that.

Brachypelma albopilosum or Brachypelma vagans, G. rosea
I started from B. vagans, then next was N. coloratovillosus
B.albopilosum is cheap too.

If you want color go with either a Greenbottle Blue or a C fasciatum. You will be glad you did :)

Use the search function and check the site Sheri mentioned. Once you know what you want out of a spider, then ask and you'll get a more focussed response. The GBB is a great spider for a beginner. So are most of the Brachypelmas and Grammostolas. Find what you like, make sure you can meet its requirements, and then get it. Keep in mind this is a long term commitment. Some of them live thirty years.

...and moody...and unpredictable.....

Is it just me or are people getting tired of answering these Q's...hence the staple "get a G. rosea" answer.
Yes, they are the single most common, yes, the vast majority of beginners get them but come on guys....get some originality here!
Actually, IMO, the "best" starter T really depends on the individual person and their needs, wants, and what they can provide. IE, if a person is afraid of spiders, you really don't want to advise getting an Avic as they are quite fast and can sprint in the blink of an eye, thus scaring the crap out of someone. There are a lot of factors to take into consideration when getting a T.

I would go to espiderworld.com or swiftiinverts.com (or some of the other T sellers) and look through the Ts. Pick the ones with the colors u like most, and do a lil research on each. That way U know u have narrowed it down to the best. (in ur opinion) I know that both these sites have a lil paragraph about each.
If u have any Qs about a species that u like alot, ask about ppl's personal experiences with them. Its not the stereotype of the T, but the paticular personality of each that is important.

Very good choices. My C. cyan just wrestled a rather ehem :8o HUGE roach (it was nearly bigger than she is) :8o and is now quite happily chowing down. Both C. cyan and G. pulchra are awesome Ts as far as first time Ts go. Both are great eaters (mine are anyway) while C. cyan grows faster thatn G. pulchra, both are worth every penny.

P. metallica eh? {D Wanna hand some of that birthday money my way too!? ;P
