I'm thinking of getting a hot scorpion. What would you recommend?

A bicolor or a Parabuthus transvaalicus. Just be very very very careful ;)

I would say try with a C. vittatus or gracilis. They're not especially dangerous, but very fast.

P. transvaalicus are too dangerous, dont forget they can spray venom in your eyes. ;)

I know that P. transvaalicus is able to do that. The two species you recommend are very unasual here in Sweden-if there are any at all.

I say go with Buthus occitanus tunetanus. I have three att home and I find them quite active as far as buthids go. At least compared to my Androctonus species that always run away and hide all the time. Won't recommend you being stung though. {D

If this is your first hot scorpion it might be a good idea not to get something very dangerous like A.A, L.Q. etc. Its your first so any mistakes you make your going to want to be an education, not your last ;) . Leiurus and 423 have recommended the best ones, I think. Species from the Hottentotta would be probably be good as well.

He did say "hot", if he had said "warm", I'd have suggested Hadrurus etc..

I agree with Hottentotta as well they may not be very big but they have really nice granulations, cool markings, and are fun to look at. They have an aggressive streak though.

Alex,

What is your experience level? What kinds of 'aggressive' but not hot scorps have you kept?

P.transvaalicus can be fairly calm but can also be quite an aggressive and psychotic species. They also can inject relatively large aounts of venom. Many of the other hot species are faster and have much more potent venom.

IMO/IME I would recommend keeping something in the moderate venom levels first, such as M.martensii or C.exilicauda or something in the same venom significance range, if you can find them in Sweden. Both of these species can be quite fast and active but are not generally considered deadly in a healthy normal-sized adult.

They are not to be underestimated but at the same time will allow you to gain experience before you dive into the world of Hot and very active/fast species.

I would also say hotentotta, mesobuthus martenssi centuroides excilicauda. those would be my favourites along with parabuthus. maybe not transvaalicus but liosoma. that is a moderate venemous species (never heard of spraying venom) not nearly as deadly as A.A. or L.Q. but we all know what this species did to fausta. So you do have to be very careful around these. and they have beautiful colors.

I have kept P. imperator and H. arizonensis for about a year. I have also been reading much about scorpions and seen their behavior in videos.
