What about local herp sites/groups, high end dealers (you'll pay more but sometimes worth it, and local shows?

I'd recommend making an effort to attend shows to buy reptiles until you can orient yourself with the decent breeders online. You can inspect the animals you're buying in person. That helps avoid little mishaps like getting the wrong species, like a Colombian Tegu instead of an Argentine (as happened to me a couple years ago via a post on kingsnake).

But, if that's out of the question, there's Fauna Classifieds. They have seller reviews worth reading before buying, which I like.

Yup, I absolutely agree. But they do have some nice herps once you are able to find them.

What's so confusing? You go down to the type of animal you're looking for, and click on it. Ads are listed by newest first. Most include the locality of the seller, so you can also find the ones closest to you if you don't want to ship. Most of the lizards are listed by type, i.e., Bearded Dragons, Geckoes, etc.

You can also go to http://www.faunaclassifieds.com , which also has an extensive selection, also broken down by type of animal. They also have a "Board Of Inquiry" which you can look up sellers on, since not all of them are honest or have any qualms about shipping you a dead animal, which I experienced first-hand last year, receiving a rotting carcass from a guy in Ohio on my birthday, no less. If you wish to place an ad, Faunca Classifieds is FREE, unlike Kingsnake, where you can read ads for free but you have to subscribe and pay if you want to place ads.

Made that mistake myself but from an LPS.
