If anyone knows of a rattery near the NY area, please let me know. I've been thinking about getting a couple of rats for a while now and have been reading up about their temperament and care. I don't know if they need to be neutered to be calm, and I would want neither marking by males nor blood from females. I'm looking for a same sex duo that is hand raised and used to being handled. Thanks in advance for any leads.

Hi
I usually get my pet rats from reptile expos.
I know that they are feeders for snakes, but when you see them, they are so cute:)
They are usually very cheap as well.
You could also try pet shops to see if they have feeders.
We raise them from when their eyes are barely open. For rats that young you may have to buy formula and hand feed them for a while. it's all part of the bonding process. :)
Hope this helps a bit.

I can't help you with finding a place to find a rat, but I can help with your other questions. They are wonderful pets, smart and affectionate. They don't need to be neutered or spayed, they won't "mark" you, but they have no problems with using you as a personal toilet whenever the need arises. They are super smart, I had one after I was first married that I was able to teach to do tricks. Males and females make equally good pets, and males can live together if you start with two young same sized males. Adult males will fight. Males can get quite a bit bigger than females, so keep that in mind. The best balanced diet to offer them is lab blocks, they have more nutrition than the seed and flake mixes you will see in pet stores. You can supplement this with healthy food, whole grain breads, vegetables, fruits. You should offer something hard to chew on, lava blocks, alfalfa cubes, or something like that to keep their teeth in shape. I used either the recycled newspaper bedding or aspen normally and I used to give mine hay or straw in the winter, they love to bed down in it. They are not a long lived pet, 2 years is about average. I hope you find some, they are fun pets.

I'll second the feeder suggestion. MY SIL got 4 of her 5 rats that way. 3 were bought as food, but didn't get eaten. one she bought from the feeder bin with thhe intention of keeping it as a pet. the last was sort of a rescue situation. Her rats are very sweet and social. They are pretty smart, too. She's got them trained to the point where she can even let them run around in the yard, and they'll come back when she calls them. You can get them pretty young and start working with them from a young age.
As for females bleeding, they really don't. The only time I've seen a rat bleeding was from a urinary tract infection. You can visually tell when a female is "in heat" but only if you pay attention to that.

I suggest googling Kim's Ark Rodent Rescue - plenty of rats available in NY from that site, all in need of good homes. You might have luck with RMCA.org, too; they have a list of breeders and rescues.

Thank you all so much. I am sure I will have many questions, but first to find where to buy/adopt from.
I already emailed Kim's Ark and a few others.

I think you can get some at Taco Bell there...

I actually order rat food from Kim's Ark rescue. I'm on the other side of the country so wouldn't make sense to get rats there...

I'd suggest finding a [pet] rat breeder. The ones that breed for pets generally try to socialize the rats a bit before letting them go. Usually pretty cheap as well, unlike breeders of other animals.

I have been in contact with PH Rattery. She has a very informative website and lots of adorable rats. If I can't get a couple from her current litter, I will be able to reserve from an upcoming litter.
Wish me luck!

I used to raise rats as feeders and as pets. As long as you get a fairly young one (walking around and eating on its own is old enough) you will have no trouble getting it used to being handled. They are great pets. They are clean and easy to care for. Ours all looked forward to being scooped up and cuddled and loved to reach over for a nibble of whatever we were eating. 2 females is the best combination to avoid fighting and breeding. One thing to be careful of is their bedding. They are susceptible to respiratory problems if you use pine or cedar bedding. We always used aspen shavings for our rats. With proper care they will live about 3 years.

You might also check your local humaine society.
The one here has tons of rats.
