Where can I get some pigeons?

I've been searching online for any reputable source for me to order some pigeons. I am only interested in some pigeons that I can breed and raise around the house. I'm not interested in racing them. I'm not interested in the best looking pigeons. In other words, I'm looking for cheap and ordinary pigeons I can order.

I haven't been able to find any that's not covered in gold and cost $500 or so. Kind of frustrating...

Anyway, if anyone here who knows how I can get some ordinary and cheap pigeons as pets, please let me know. Again, I'm not looking for the top of the line pedigree or pigeons that manufacture golden eggs. All the sources online seem to only have pigeons that will give you a golden egg a day so they charge you like $500 each.

Thanks.

Diamond doves are fun. I used to have one (your meant to keep them in pairs but this one was clearly preparing to kick the bucket). They are generally quiet and coo softly now and again, shy too. Not for handling as it stresses them but they are GORGEOUS and totally worth it to have. An individual cost 25 pounds but I know they go for cheaper elsewhere. REALLY cheap to keep. But most birds are.

I called her Pie. I was quite inibriated when I named her. But she was so pretty and pleasant to have around the house.

I know I didn't really answer the how there but I figure if you know what you want you know what to chase.

Suggest you take a trip to Trafalgar Square in London.....bring protective clothing with you though!

Try EggBid.com. My problem is looking for pigeons like you see in cities, most of what can be found on EggBid are breeds I personally find abhorent, like those deformed goldfish. Screwed up bodies, weird faces, etc.

I did find a mated pair of Damascene pigeons for $30 shipping included from a seller on there. Gorgeous pigeons, raised up three chicks this summer alone.

Where are you in Illinois? I'm in SW, Indiana.

You might also call your local city office and ask who they use for pigeon eradication. Around here they live trap them to take them elsewhere to humanely euthanize them, after that whole poisoning fiasco a few years back with dead and dying birds flopping all over the streets. They might put you into contact with a company that traps pigeons.

Some people around here have also had good luck live trapping them near grain elevators or enlisting the grain elevator staff into catching them for you while they're sitting on nests or such.

Yea eggbid would be your best bet. If you want to catch your own, bring a fishing net and search for a parking ramp with pigeons{D . Best time is usually at night where the birds are roosting.

By "around the house" I assume you mean a massive aviary out back, right? ;) Because they're not really a very good indoor bird choice.

I see a lot of pigeons on Petfinder and in bird sanctuaries, so definately check out those options. If you'd be willing to compromise for doves, there is a rescue in Schererville IN that has ringnecks and diamond doves for adoption right now.

At first, I will have them indoor. Eventually, I will move them outside. I'm starting to get the materials to build a place for them right now.

Depends. Do doves come back once they know this is their home? Because I really do plan to eventually have them outside. And eventually, I want to have a whole flock of them :)

The reason I want to start having pigeons again is because I grew up in a farm. My family had whole flocks of pigeons. We just let them roam outside and in the evening when they are all back we would close the door. We then let them out in the morning. Now, these were tamed enough that when I was a kid I used to go through the whole nest and randomly pick them up and pet them.

I thought I'd pick it up again. But here in America, you people charge an arm and a leg for a couple of birds...

But yes, if doves are as good as pigeons in regard to knowing where their home is, I will definitely go with doves as well.

What size birds are you looking for? Diamond doves are cool but they're kinda on the shrimpy side.. Not sure about their homing abilities I'm sure someone else is on here. I thought about getting some once, but all the ones I've ever seen looked lethargic and sick at the store :(

I think most doves would be a bit frail for living outdoors, I'm not an expert, but most doves I see are kept indoors as cage bird pets.

Here I can't let my pigeons out and enjoy their flying, the hawks are so bad they sit on my coop and stare in.

Last year I had several pigeons turn up dead inside the pen and partially eaten, looked like raccoon damage. So I set up a live trap with one of the carcasses and caught a Cooper's Hawk in it the next day. I kept it a few days in a pen till the DNR decided to stop being dumbwits and help me with it, rather than just tell me it's a federal offense to trap them. Yeah, next time I'll put a "No Raptors!" sign on the trap on the ground.

But all pigeons will return to their home at night, you just need to keep them penned up for a couple of months prior so they know where their home is before releasing them.

I share your plight in the search, when I ask locally for pigeons people give me a weird look and ask "What fer, they're such nasty birds."

Ooh ooh ooh can't you just go outside and catch some?? This way you breed them and domesticate the wild ones. But I assume as long as you provide food a pigeon will stay by your side. {D
