It was a cold, overcast day when we were walking through a rural property on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. It was a small group comprised of myself and a few close relatives. We were engaged in conversation when the leader of the group almost stepped over a snake! It was a young tiger snake right by our feet. It was late in the day too - all the more unusual for a snake to be out in the open like this. Even so, it didn't hang around. The snake slowly slithered away into a nearby pile of stones. Before it made it's sluggish retreat, I managed to take a few photos.

Thanks! This is the first snake that Ive photographed in the wild. Here's the second pic.

I also have a third photo I wanted to post but it looks like I have exceeded my quota for images on this forum. I had to reduce the resolution of this second pic quite bit to squeeze it in so it's probably going to turn out tiny.

Nice find!

I love finding snakes out and about when they should be down for the winter. Haven't done it in a while though. A few years ago I found a small Thamnophis sp. basking on a service road in a local consevation area. It was mid-December and there was quite a bit of snow on the ground but it was a nice, sunny day so I guess he decided to come out and have a look around.

Cool, how cold does it get there? I recently came across a rattlesnake here is tx, not so uncommon for those to be out on warm days though. Have you tried Photobucket?, not much room on this site for pics, you run out fast. If you try Photobucket and have questions, let me know. Man I have to get out of here now, growing roots in this seat...

A snake out in the snow? Wow! Was probably about 16 – 18 degrees Celcius over here that day.

Tiger snakes and Copperheads are the two main species to be found on the island. Tiger snakes (like the one in the photos) are more commonly seen - and highly venomous.

Yea, I'll try Photobucket and give that a go. I do notice though that with a lot of photos embedded from Photobucket on various forums, the photos are no longer active....don't know if this is just a coincidence.
