When do newly hatched Jumping Spiders show movement?

About 1 month ago, I captured a bold jumping spider. I made a nice custom made enclosure for it with substrate, branches, and leaves. The spider loved the enclosure and I fed it about a dozen flies caught around the house. Well, about 2-3 weeks ago, the spider made a massive nest on the top of the enclosure. Initially, I thought this was just going to be it's nest where it would molt and hunt out of. I kept checking on it every day, and it wouldn't leave the nest. A few days later, it laid an egg sack, about half the size of a gumball. Now, I was never intending to look after an entire egg sac of spiders, I was mainly just very interested in jumping spiders and was ready to care for this one to the best of my ability. However, now I feel as though it is my responsibility in a way to care for them, because they were born in my enclosure.

I don't know if it was either today or yesterday, but the egg sac appears as though it definitely hatched. Today I went to look at her, and initially, I thought she was in the nest at first, as I saw a big climb of black dots that looked like her at first glance, but then I noticed she was moving around the enclosure looking for food. I looked back again, and it looked like about 100 individual black dots. The reason I'm so concerned, is that even when looking very closely, it doesn't appear as though any of them are moving. I would've assumed baby spiders would be very energetic and moving around the nest, however maybe they just aren't developed enough to move. I mainly just wanted to know when or if they should've been moving by now, and also potentially, what should I do next? I was planning on releasing the babies once they emerged from the nest, then buying a higher quality enclosure for the female. Also, this is my first spider so I don't know much about them, I just know a few basics. I watch a lot of Exotics Lair.

Hey that’s awesome congrats in the same boat myself! My baby just payed her second clutch so it takes 4-6 weeks for them to come out you can go on Amazon and get small deli cups. I bought a hundred for around ten and in the midst of poking the holes for ventilation. I’ll attach a pic of what it looks like at 4 weeks about you will know they will all be out running around. Get yourself a stocking or craft lace and put around the enclosure. No more flies caught you have to by the pupae a lot of horror stories of spoods dying from wild caught (even though they are in your house it’s still considered wild ) Check out Josh’s frogs they are awesome I use wax worms since they don’t flail but do move a little and I got house fly pupae that will hatch in about 4 days and if you keep them in a bigger container there’s a guy on YouTube that shows you how to refrigerate to stun the flies then throw one in. She might not take food for up to a month don’t be concerned. Side note the more you feed them when she isn’t pregnant the less time they live. Reddit has a vast amount of info because the rest of the internet is limited. I personally had to learn through trial and error and Reddit. Before Reddit my wife and I were feeding our first one that’s my main picture buggy when we found him 5 months ago ants which is the worst but he wound up dying recently of old age. Anything you need let me know I’ll link you to the vids and the stuff you need if you want!

In regards to them not moving my baby Cinnabon pictured here. The babies didn’t move for a long while after hatching but now they live as hell and when you put a flash light on them they go nuts. Even witnessed the mom coming over and then vibrating which might of been them communicating !

Also you can try your local pet store to get meal worms or wax worms and get from Amazon a large feeding tweezer but like I said don’t be surprised if she doesn’t eat but also space out the feedings as they can go a month without eating. Be careful with the meal worms because they are wild get real wild !

Also mist near the sac but not on as they all including momma will periodically come out to drink you can purchase one for cheap on Amazon as well !

Thank you so much, you've been incredibly helpful to me! I'll have to check out those deli cups and order some. I will also check my local pet store for better food options instead of the house flies. Ever since I got her, it seems like she is always hungry as every time I put a fly in there, she pursues it and kills it usually within a few seconds. There hasn't been a time yet where she didn't want to eat right away. It makes me think that she might not be eating enough, but I hear these spiders only need to eat once or twice a week. I would imagine the meal worms would be much more nutritious, so then she may only need to eat once a week. I also do have a spray bottle that I used to initially mist the enclosure with when I first set it up. I haven't misted it since then, but it's looking like it's starting to get a little dry so I'll have to mist it again soon. Thank you again so much for your help, I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to do that. I wish you the best of luck with your jumping spiders as well!

Don’t mist the mulch I got rid of mulch as I found mold on the branches I put in after baking them for 15 minutes on 250 degrees. Still they became moldy. Now I order everything fake off Amazon. There’s a lot of stuff and I use things my daughter chooses and wash thoroughly before gorilla glue gunning them in. If you want a list of safe fake grass that have no issues from other fellow jumper enthusiasts as well as Etsy enclosure shop owners. Below is pixie spoodie doodie’s enclosure made out of a Walmart food container I purchased from Etsy. Also with mulch the meal worms can burrow and hide and potentially harm your angel.

Wow, that enclosure looks incredible! I really like it a lot. That looks like the ideal set up. I haven't invested anything into my enclosure so mine isn't the best quality, I used a big plastic jar and made holes using a guide. Filled about 2 inches worth of cypress mulch, and put branches in various different angles, and put some leaves throughout and on the top. It was a great enclosure for my adult jumping spider, but it's not suitable for babies since they could easily get out of the airholes. I'll need to arrange something before they leave the nest or they will be all over my house!

Like what the said, you could get a fine mesh or tule and tape it over the air holes (tape from the outside so the spiders don’t get stuck. But make sure there is no gap between the outside and the tule or else they could get there and get squished accidentally) you can do this until you move them into smaller containers or release them.

Exactly tule is what I meant lol I said lace my wife came up with that as a sub for the stocking the stocking is def easier if you see in the picture I posted I have to put a rubber band to keep the to pieces I wrapped around the pickle jar.

Just make sure anything you put in the enclosure that was live Ie sticks branches leaves you bake for 15 min or more on 250 degrees. Get small deli cups or look up small amac boxes on Amazon pretty cheap as well. I use the deli cups and made a ton of wholes with a tweezer but they were still able to get out of the holes as not every one comes out the same time so delicately puncture and not to deep. I wet and wrung out a small piece of paper towel and threw in a tiny fake piece of leaf and some fake mulch I’ve let air out for a couple weeks . Got flightless fruit flies from Josh’s frogs they are live as heck and go all over when you open so I get some in a separate deli cup refrigerate and then when they are stunned put one in each cup because they need to be fed every one to two days. Also thank you so much I just ordered the cheapest enclosure on Etsy or bought zillas and went nuts with the glue gun and anything I could find.

So much to my surprise, it seems as though many of the babies are alive and active. Up until today, I didn't see hardly any movement. However, when I checked today, there was about 20 mini spiders all moving like crazy throughout the nest. I actually couldn't believe it. I have a new custom made enclosure from Etsy on the way that arrives Thursday. Here is the link for it, please let me know what you think:

I think it will be perfect for the adult female, however I believe I will still have to get cups for the baby spiders. I don't know exactly how I should transfer them into the cups, because the enclosure they are in now is a big plastic jar and their nest is on the lid. I was thinking I would just have to cut the jar in half then I would have the top part to access them, but I don't know how I would get them in cups based on the situation.

Ok here’s what you do if it can stand without falling turn it upside down but don’t separate the mom to soon or the cutting works but they will go everywhere I had to sit with the cups and a safety pin putting an absurd amount of holes in the cups and a damp paper towel at the bottom and fake leaves mine had 69 four died and we let go 54 yesterday two weeks after emergence day. We let mom guard them for a couple weeks till they all came out so as not to make her depressed and she has another clutch she laid right after that she’s guarding

I won't be able to turn the temporary enclosure upside down, since I have mulch on the bottom. The only way I can keep the nest in tact is to use a knife to cut 2/3rds up the jar and maybe transfer the top of the jar in the new enclosure. I'm not sure if it would make sense or not to put the top part of the jar into the new enclosure, or if I should just separate them individually. They are still really small so I think I may be better off try to transfer the lid into the new enclosure until they get bigger.

Yes wait till they are bigger and all of them come out and momma abandons them don’t wait to long because they will bug out and eat each other after about three weeks of all of them coming out get some flightless fruit flies from Josh’s frogs get the smallest ones I think they are hidei flies and I separate the flies outside into deli cups so all the ones that fall will just scurry away and then put the deli cups full of flies on the refrigerator door to stun them try and twenty one for each baby that emerged and once they are stunned dump into the jar . If you can cut a whole in the jar and you can temp clog it with paper towel so you can mist in the bottom where the babies aren’t and let in your stunned fruit flies . Message me once they all are out and I’ll talk you through putting them in separate deli cups but this is the end result. They are arboreal so they always go up so I flip the cups let them go to the top that used to be the bottom and then I can open lid quickly throw in a damp paper towel and a fly into each when I had 69 it took an hour or so now there’s 15 so it’ll take way less I kept so many because a lot die slings are super temperamental I’ve lost two wild caught slings a p audax flower may queen just recently and a zebra jumper a month ago they just stopped eating and climbing then death curl in trying the icu to revive flower but it isn’t looking good
