Snapple, That's what they call 'em here in Louisiana. That or "gal nippers". They are out in force in early spring. I used to feed them to a gp of Broadhead Skinks I had years ago. Not much meat there. Yes, Crane Fly is the correct tag. Terry

Lol yup Crane fly is correct. That's interesting that you get them in the spring. Here in Canada we get them "en-mass" in August and September. I occasionally breed Canadian native mantids (Mantis religiosa) in captivity and use crane flies as one of many feeders for the nyphs. :p

They call them "mosquito eaters" in E tx(lol they don't eat mosquitoes though...) I find the larvae in my yard but never have seen a congregation like in caco's pic.

I saw a group of these once. I didn't know what they were at the time. It was after a rain and they were all under a rotting collard leaf.

I wonder if the larvae make good feeders for some things, too bad the burrow. I feed Cranes to vittatus just last night.
