I have a new GBB, and he's in a small cup/jar, and I'm just wondering what a good material or item is for him to hide in? He's about 1", so something that'll work for that size.

Thank you,

I don't give any of my slings hides. They'll dig them on thier own or spin webs if they want to. I'd rather see how they are doing easily.

Black film canasters cut in half lengthwise. For a nice Martha Stewart touch, you can hotglue some subsrtate to it to make it more homey.

Go to a hardware store and look at all the little black plastic tube thingies. These are light, and won't cause substrate to collapse. Be sure to wash them before use. I used a black chair-leg tip one-quarter-embedded in the soil.

i would agree with washout on that they dont need hides. if u give a gbb a hide u would never see it and for one thing it does web up its whole incloser so i would jsut let it do its work in the container u have it in then when it gets bigger give it a hide but at 1 inch i dont think its worth it

Just seems like he has a lot of room, so I didn't want him to feel vulnerable. Thanks for the ideas guys, I'll see what I can come up with.

Thanks,

You don't need a hide for a 1 inch GBB. Mine is now 3 inches and I don't provide a hide. It makes it's own. Give it some time and it will build a bowl shaped web in the jar and will be happy with that ;)

Hmm, maybe that is the best way to go. Anyways, another question:

Since GBB prefer to be on the drier side, does this go for GBB slings as well? Or should I keep him just as moist as any other sling?

Thanks,

I have always kept mine on bone dry peat. I lightly mist the web once every week or 2. GBBs are tuff as nails and do real good in dry conditions. Usually the only time I actually ever see it drink is right after a molt. I usually get a dropper and put about 4-5 drops of water on the web and it will usually drink. Other than that it hardly drinks. ;)

I've had my GBB since it was .75 inch, it's now about 2 1/2 inches. It has never used the hides we've provided and it to this day does not use its hide. As slings they are often times semi arboreal and will web the heck out of everything in sight. If you feel that there is too much empty space for it, put a little artifical leaf fo two in for it to hide under, web up, whatever it wants. Most GBB's don't use hides, they make their own out of webbing.

Half egg shells make good hides for small invertebrates. They're naturally curved, light enough not to be dangerous if tunnelled under, and completely organic. Millipedes and snails also benefit from chewing on them - but I don't imagine slings will!

It's always nice to provide credit where credit is due! Some people can get quite bent about this sort of thing. Happily, you two seem to have taken a pleasant and reasonable attitude about it!

Whoever thought of it, I just want to say it looks totally excellent! Cheap, easy, and very functional. I like it! Perhaps a lot of work for people who are housing 500, or even 50 slings, but for the smaller collections.....

Personally, I get a lot of mileage out of cheap plastic or silk plants. You can buy one fake fern for 5 or 10 bucks and cut off individual leaves for vials/small jars. Hobby Lobby has a huge selection, with leaves, buds, and flowers of all shapes, sizes and colors.
