Bearded dragon would be a good choice. Chinese water dragons get about medium size. maybe a blue tongued skink, but not familiar with them.

i was thinking a bearded but i have had one and i'm looking for something new. water dragons (if i'm not mistaken) are arboreal... not good for a 55 long. and a blue tongue eats veggies and bugs. i'm looking more for a strict carnivore. maybe something a bit on the monitor side. maybe a sahvanna but i would like something a bit more interesting.

i worked with a few tegus at a zoo i was at and not to be offensive to anyone who owns them... i thought they were really ugly. its those big cheeks i think. i think they are beautiful as babies tho!

Savannah monitor is all I can think that fits your description. They can usually be docile and can get a decent size. Anything else is really going to get so big it wont want roaches eventually. What about Uryomastix? (sp?) or some sort of plated lizard?

uromastyx are primarily vegetarian. a little bit of protein occassionally won't hurt them, but they won't do anything to reduce the numbers of a roach colony.

i've seen frilled lizards and draco lizards on the market these days...maybe one of those might fit the bill? of course i don't really know that much about their care so i could be talking out the other side of my face here lol:)...lizards aren't really my thing but i thought i'd throw this out there in case you hadn't thought of these:)
