I found this in my monitor's enclosure as I was stirring the substrate. Murphy is a black-throat monitor, not yet full grown although he has outgrown crickets. I've been feeding him superworms and I'm really hoping this ugly grub is the next phase in the life of said worm. Can anyone ID this for sure?

Thanks!

Ok do not panic but it is a extraterrestria being, they have been here for seaveral years now. It is a common thing in oregon, have you noticed lights in the sky lately. The goverment has been combating them for seaveral years, they simply take the people that find them, and hold them under the new partriot act. {D ;P {D

It is the next stage in superworm development.

Ugh, that's a pretty nasty looking thing. This is one of the rare instances when I can say I'm glad I feed crickets.

I was going to make a probing joke, but I think it's just as well I leave this one alone. LOL Thanks, Dark. :D

most def a mealworm or superworm pupa. When it is getting closer to turning into a beetle, the linings of its leg will get darker.

I'm really amazed anyone who's ever used beetle larva as feeders has never seen something as basic and common as a beetle pupa. Heck, surely you've seen them here on the boards by now.

I think they're pretty, like sarcophagi. The tail wiggles when they're picked up. I used to put them in little clay cradles I made when I was little and line them up on a shelf for lord knows why.

Superworms dont just pupate like meal worms do. They have to have a place that is dark and quiet and no activity. THEN They pupate. So its not so odd that shes never seen a superworm pupae.
They stink to HIGH Heaven when they become a beetle :D Like a wee skunk. My daughter has a colony of them (which I am forbidden to use as feeders:rolleyes: )

I use the pupae of my meal worms to feed to slings. Just pop one in and they can walk over at their leasure and munch on it without fear of the wee sling being damaged. And I dont have to kill a cricket or squish a mealworm head. Pupae have many uses and talents.......aside from the probing one.;P

...just another confirmation - you've got a beetle larvae. Take it out of the cage and put it in a smaller cage with a little bit of any grain as substrate (oat bran preferably...but oatmeal would even work in a pinch). In a few days to a week, you'll have a neat little beetle crawling around.

Maybe it's a dragonfly larvi?
Uh, dragonflies don't even have larva or pupa. They have predatory, AQUATIC nymphs that molt directly into adult dragonflies, so how would that even be possible?
