How do you figure it's big? There's nothing in the shot to give you a reference. I figured it was pretty small because the line it crosses looks like grout between two tiles. No idea what that black thing is though.

It looks to me like some sort of Puss Moth Caterpillar. This is the closest match I could find but there wasn't any info on the site. This is the closest match I found with info. It's a little over halfway down the page.

Yes that is a Real caterpillar!

IMO, that specimen is probably no more than 1 1/2 inches, maybe even smaller. That black object in the background looks the foot of a stand or a metal chair, and the flooring looks like 8"x 8" ceramic tiles. Those small black dots on the tile are obviously specs of dirt and debris. You can even see the scrathces on the surface of the tile. As to what the heck that thing is, I have no idea, but it is not very large at all.

WOW!!!! That is one impressive caterpillar. I was searching for a ID for that guy, but could only come up with one caterpillar that barely came close. Megalopyge opercularis looks to be on the same wave length, but not really. Man what the heck was that thing? "DON"T TOUCH IT!!!!"
