Hey really sorry to post on your forum but this website won't let me create one for some reason. I want to get a praying mantis and I was wondering what species are legal to own in South Carolina and if I want an exotic one do I need a permit? If so where can I get one

That would be a question to ask on the troubleshooting/suggestions category. You can get great starter kits here!

And the whole legal thing, you should search for on your own it's pretty simple to search for it on google.

Well considering all I did was look up "pet insect laws in South Carolina" I foundSouth Carolina

Beaufort – No person shall keep or permit to be kept in the city any wild animal, alligator, or poisonous reptile as a "pet." Wild animal includes monkeys, raccoon, skunk, leopard, panther, lion, tiger or any other warm blooded animal which can normally be found in the wild state.
Greenville – No person shall keep or permit to be kept any wild animal in the city. Wild animal means an untamed animal, living in its natural state, including but not limited to alligators, crocodiles, bears, big cats, canine family, nonhuman primates, and venomous snakes.
Lexington County – It is unlawful for any person to possess an exotic animal as a "pet." Exotic animals include lions, tigers, bears, wolves, coyotes, gorillas, elephants, alligators, crocodiles, venomous lizards, etc.
North Augusta – No wild animals may be kept within the city except under such conditions as shall be fixed by the council.
North Myrtle – It is unlawful for any person to keep any wild animals, vicious animals, reptiles, livestock or poultry within city limits.
Spartanburg – No person shall keep or permit to be kept any wild animal as a "pet." Wild animal means any raccoon, squirrel, poisonous snake, leopard, panther, lion, tiger, lynx, mountain lion or any other warm-blooded animal which can normally be found in the wild state.

By the way your state insect is a mantis. So I don't think it would be a problem to keep a mantid depending on the city.

Out of all mantids I've ever owned, the genus Iris seems to be the most hardy, they can go a long time without food or water.
