I bought an ornate from petco a few hours ago as the local reptile show had none :(
Was wondering if it is really an ornate or just a green pacman? I didn't get a good other body photo until he burrowed so I just use my macro lens to snap what I could while burrowed
First pic is from my cell, I've never owned a frog before.

Ornatas will have a dot behind both eyes, cranwellis will have a band that joins together judging from the pictures your looks like a cranwelli or regular pac man frog.

I do like him, alot! Something about chubby frogs that are adorable. When he is almost completely burrowed will he eat from that position. I dont want to leave a cricket in there to nibble on him since he is only 1.5"

What is the average growth rates for pacmans? I've been reading around 4-6 months and other places 2-4 years.

Out of curiosity, how long does it take them to adjust to the new home? it seems to have no interest in food even when the cricket walks and rests on its mouth or if I attempt tong feed. When my roaches come in later this week I will try and see if it is more apt to eating.

Its a cranwelli. Give it sometime to acclimate to its new home. It does not look like it has been starving. It might have already ate earlier that day or the previous day. Looks very healthy to me.

Thank you very much for your post :) Should I keep him a smaller KK or move him to a 10gal tank? I'm going to pick up a 3" pixie frog right now and was going to use a 10gal tank.

Do either need special lighting or heat? My house stays around 70 at night and 73-75 during the day. I haven't gotten any heat pads as of yet.

You welcome. You can keep him what he is in now or a 10 gallon. Its up to you. It will thrive in either one. Pacmans dont move much. They are lazy and just wait for there food to come to them. Make it substrate deep enough for it to bury under and keep its substrate damp. Not soaked. I am guessing your pixie will be an adspersus. Pixies are active and will chase there food down. Keep in mind you will have to move your pixie to a 20 gallon long in a couple of months though. They grow like wild fire there first 6 months. Especially males. Both frogs need a water dish to soak in. IMO...your temps are a little low. I would provide and over head heat light during the day so they can warm up and digest there food better. Here is a pic of my 10 gallon setups I used.

Nice setup! He hasn't eaten since I got him two days ago. Shows no interest even when the meal is on his mouth. He has about 3" of eco-earth and stays all buy eyes burrowed. I just added a heat lamp above him and his new neighbor the pixie frog which has downed 6 large crickets and a gravid dubia in 15 minutes he didnt have any transition lag like my pacman then again he is a bit under weight it seems.

I really appreciate all your help, never had frogs before so it's a big adjustment for me being an arachnid guy.

If I had to pick one thing about frogs that can be hard, it's when they get sick; if you can already tell that your frog is ill, it's probably too late to do anything about it, unless you have immediate access to treatment and you already know what's wrong (which is uncommon and sometimes very difficult to figure out).

The best way to keep a frog from getting sick is to keep things very clean. Daily waterbowl changes and frequent spot cleaning of feces, etc. is important. For smaller, less rambunctious species, making a vivarium for them with live plants and a functioning ecosystem helps greatly. This is harder to accomplish with pacman frogs, because they tend to bulldoze plants with their burrowing habits.

Also, be careful with the heating equipment. You really don't want the tank to get warmer than about 80, and a range of 75-80 for daytime temps is as far as I would go. Most frogs start having issues around 82, iirc.

Keep him wet. I keep all my babies in water with a piece of foam they can climb onto to get out of the water. I have a bunch of these guys and the only time I put them on any type of soil is when I am cycling them to breed. Keeping the water clean is very important so dont neglect water changes. Be careful not to dry the tank out too much with a heat lamp.

Ok, so no heat lamp? Tank temps are about 82F my house is only 73F during the day and 70F at night. I have the 50watt all purpose sunglo about 18" away from the top of the tanks. The pixie stays at the warmest end and the pac just does nothing, coming on three days and no food. One of my best friends works at petco and has cared for him since he was the size of a nickle and he ate the night before I bought him.

Pixie in big tank pacman in small one. The pixie is to the right of the top corner of water bowl. Pacman is in the middle left of his kk and has not moved only blinked.

OK, I added a timer to the mix, so its on a 12 hour night/day schedule but since the tanks are in the living room I have it start at 8am then it stays on 2 hrs then off for 1 and repeated until 8pm. We have a lot of large windows in the living room so they have a day/night already just adding some extra heat. Should I have it turn on a few times during the night or will that disrupt them?

It might be the heat.

I keep my C. ornata at 75-78 during the day and 70-74 at night, and it has the appetite of a black hole.

Try removing the heat and keeping things a little more moist; that might do the trick. Just try to keep temps in the mid to upper 70's (same for the Pyxie; I've never had a Pyxicephalus before, but most frogs don't want temps to get much higher than 80, so try to keep that in mind).

Also, not trying to be nasty/offensive, but if that reddish thing in the left tank is a water dish, it looks about time to change it out with some new water; the "level of dirtiness" in there now (at the time of the pic, anyway) is high enough that a change should be considered. I usually just use dish soap (the liquid stuff) and a sponge especially for this. I dump out the old water, rinse it, scrub it out with a soapy sponge, rinse it again (thoroughly) and refill it with conditioned tap water. I've gotten it down to the point that it takes less than 2 minutes for me to do.

That's for the reply, no offense taken.the pixie had just eaten and stepped in the dish.I've be changing it daily with conditioner and purified water. Should I clean it each time he gets in from hunting?

So I should just let them stay in the range of 70-80f or the natural fluctuation of our home

Well, after the pacman had a water change I paced him in the water which he stayed for a few minutes.then I dropped in a cricket which he ate! He did want the second one though. He was all puffed up and it was cute.

If your house or a room in your house has temperatures consistently in the mid 70's, that should be fine.

If that's questionable, then a purchasing a small incandescent bulb for heating purposes isn't a bad idea.

I soaked him for 10 mins in warm water then transferred him into a 10gal tank. He still hasn't eaten but that one cricket in 5 days.
