What kind of spider is this?

Montreal. Sorry no scale, but I'd say the spider was bigger than a nickel but smaller than a quarter. This web was one of the most amazing ones I've ever seen, and I once saw a gigantic (four feet-is) orb weaver web when I lived in the Congo. This guy's web was between branches of ivy on the side of my building and shrubs that were part of the landscaping. The wind was blowing quite hard and I just don't know how he had time to make this web without a gust blowing it away.
