Hello everyone, I found these grasshoppers in SoCal Can anyone ID them for me? They're pretty big. I think they're the same species, but I could be wrong. I've been thinking about breeding them once I find some more adults. Does anyone know what they eat? I tried giving them some lettuce, carrots, and cabbages, but they aren't eating it. :( There's not even holes or bite marks on the leaves.

Here's the adult that was missing a leg. These guys are easy to catch, while flying, but jumping is a different story :wall:

I was messing around with a leaf and I didn't even realize he was on it until about 2 minutes later.

I kept some lubber grasshoppers and they ate Rosa multiflora leaves. Try some wild stuff, leaves of thorn bushes, roses, wild plant leaves. Grasshoppers will cannibalize and even eat meat. Worth a try. They are opportunistic feeders. I do not know what species you have there, but maybe the food tip will help.

Gray Bird Grasshopper (Schistocerca nitens)

I used to catch these when I was a kid. Try using rose or citrus foliage...i've had success with both, particularly the former. :)

Interesting. I have indeed noticed these they are very abundant in SoCal(LB). Has anyone tried culturing them? The adults seem far too large/spiky for anything to eat though.(unless you have maybe a large lizard).

I could never get any breeding between adults, but I did once get a female to lay eggs. Unfortunately they never hatched.

If you remove the rear legs(which work well as food for some spiderlings*), many Ts will take them...

*- Not individuals, but large groups of them.
