I found this one in Waterford, Michigan last night. I have NEVER seen this jumping spider before here, and TRUST me, I am always looking for them every place I go!

At first, I thought it was a sac spider, but upon closer inspection, I saw the familiar Salticidae eye placement. She is a dove grey colour, with red racing stripes on her abdomen. She measures about 14 mm. Is this a Maevia???? If so, what the hell is it doing way up here??

I wish I'd had a KK or a jar with me! What a cool jumper!

Odd Spider

I'm going back as soon as I can, to try and find another specimen.

As I said, by going through EVERY photo of jumpers on bugguide.net, the only one that even looks close to this spider is Maevia sp.-- or Dimorphic Jumping Spider. Those are NOT native to Michigan, as far as I know. They are native to the western and southern U.S.!

Apparently, the males of the species are very wildly-patterned and coloured.

I did see another spider, that was very strange looking-- almost like a Ghost Spider (another I have not ever seen here).

I had best take a few KK's and deli cups with me, next time!

That's interesting, I recently found a very similar looking spider up at my parents' place in Lexington, MA. Same size and very similar coloring, it has those same red racing stripes.

Do you guys think it's the same species? I was thinking of bringing it back, but I let it go instead. I'm actually going back up in a few days so I'll look for another one.

Same Spider?

That spider does look VERY similar to the one I found!

I think these are Maevia inclemens. I wonder where they are coming from??

I see you're in New Jersey, so maybe they have invaded the east coast??

Your pics are MUCH better than mine! She sure is a pretty little thing, with her pink palps! :) A lot more markings than my spider..

That is the coolest thing ever.... I've only recently noticed how entirely groovy the native jumping spiders are; and I don't know a single thing about them....but they're awfully pretty. :)
