What is something you dislike about the hobby?

Thought this would be an interesting one on a board dedicated to everyone who LOVES this hobby. So what’s something you dislike personally? Mine has to be when people ask for advice and then argue with anyone who has a different opinion to them when they’ve only got their and the T’s safety in mind. Why ask!

Same as life. Idiots. And I don't mean those that simply don't know something. Everyday is a school day for everyone.

Idiots are idiots and refuse to be helped or educated.

That it’s called a hobby. Why is that?

Baking, sewing, painting, building models, those are hobbies. Animals? I’m not [insert animal name here] hobbiest, I’m an animal owner/lover/enthusiast. I need answers, and NOW...my therapy session is in one hour and I need to have something to reflect on during the session to show progress. 😋

Oh don't. Please don't open that door to me again. After the last one I've accepted that some call it that filthy word.

The one true thing I dislike is the outdated or really bad information out there that is on the internet intentionally. No one is perfect but some of the really bad misinformation still roams around.

I hate feeding slings. I like growing them up, it's rewarding, but oh boy do I hate cutting mealworms up for tiny slings. Still better than fruit flies though.

Also, I dislike the aesthetic at times. Even if the spiders are happy in sterilite tubs, it just looks like we're Tupperware hoarders - unless everything is in fancy expensive acrylic. Even if I find a nice clear jar, there's no escaping that I have a spider in an old cashew jar, lol.

I really don’t like how some sellers can't tell me where the tarantulas I’m buying come from other than the country of export. All of the dead ones I put in alcohol have a location of “pet trade” on the labels I write to be included in the jar. Totally lame.

Um ..... new undescribed species price gouging.....can't stand.....even more so when its slings for $150-25o a pop. Like nothing is just that rare or expensive, and I dont know what it even actually is yet, im not paying that much for it. And to top it off cant say where they came from, other than some self appointed label.

I look at pamphobeteus and xenethis and think man y'all a bunch of fools......a tarantula is just monetarily not ever worth that much, especially when you dont know what it is.

The plant world works a little bit different and have a few cf. and sp. species but those guys never get bred, and wont get bred until I can get an actual ID on them. If I did Then id get offspring that are 'species cf. Y ' x. cf. species Y(which already may be species W x. species Z) mixed with something else. Which would be very mutty and there for any off spring would just not be worth anything, other than novelty.....

So biggest thing I dont get about this hobby is the desire to collect undescribed species paying an arm and a leg for them, and then do anything with them other than just have them around.

My Ts are my therapy to be honest. I posted a comment on Tarantula Collective's recent video on Addicted To Tarantulas - Too Many Too Fast - Are You A Tarantula Addict? mentioning that since lockdown they've been my main priority, as well as helping me cope with getting out of a bad, emotionally abusive relationship. We often joke on here about being addicted to Ts but I think we all understand the difference between addiction, which is uncontrolled, and knowing our limits for the good of our Ts and ourselves. They've filled a void for me, and as sad as it is to say... I enjoy my own company now. I don't need to go out, drink too much, and hate myself the day after due to feeling incapable otherwise due to anxiety and depression (medicated). Lockdown saved my life to be honest. And the most social interaction I have is going to work, or... Actually, you guys. *world's smallest violin* :shy:

Wow, something must have happened recently to make you feel that way.

I use the term Hobby, and it does kinda feel dirty.

I think that when you do stuff for the spiders - its "hobby-like". Making the enclosures, going out and finding/shaping chunks of wood to put in, taking care of feeders etc. It's not the same as when you do something for your dog like playing, petting, grabbing a mass-produced dog biscuit from a bag for him. etc.

Love my Ts to death, don't get me wrong. But there are a lot more tools and crafting associated with their care. So I can see where the term hobby started being used.

Me? I hate the stigma.
I don't tell anyone outside of my friend group that I keep T's - and they still rip on me for it.

People can be hella disrespectful too - "lol gonna stomp on your spiders - why are you getting mad? it's just a spider!"

It's pretty much a daily occurrence now tbh

I constantly find myself thinking "I've got a jar of dirt!"

it's just a spider!
I've seen this statement on this very board, by a supposed keeper. Wanted to track them down and rescue their Ts :lurking:

I don't like people grabbing large numbers of specimens out of the wild (often illegally) to the point where they become a threatened species.

I understand that we need to take a few in order to establish breeding in the hobby, but that amount wouldn't have large negative consequences on the wild populations. If people are willing to pay a lot for adult Ts, someone is always going to try to get those adults by any means necessary. It's rather ugly.

Agreed - the vast majority of species are now so prevalent in the hobby with breeders doing their part, W/C is just unnecessary and gives us a bad name as evil poachers.

Funny. I was thinking exactly this the other day. I have a cat too but don't call myself a cat hobbiest.
Every time I use the word when talking about t keeping, I always feel it sounds a bit lame. Going to try not to use it anymore!

I kinda feel like that's something you dislike about message boards, not the hobby. I was a moderator on a body building message board for a long time. It's the same story, different topic.
