Hey there im kinda new to the whole tarantula thing and i wanted to get my first one here in a few weeks. Although i am not exactly sure on what kind i should get. Ive looked at Avicularia Metallica and thats what I seem to be leaning to at the moment. Does anyone have any suggestions on the topic?

Avics, in general, have a rep for being "difficult" to keep. Happily, there are many more Avic keepers out there who have had success with the genus, than not.

The Avic avic is the best beginner T you can find. Contrary to popular belief, I've found this species to be pretty hardy. They are also very "tolerant." Most Avics are not inclined to bite as a first reaction, though they will dart, jump, and/or shoot poop a you. That is not to say they never will bite.....ANY T can and will bite if it feels the need to do so.....Avics typically put up with more crap from us humans than alot of other species will.

If you desire to be hands-on with your T's, Avic avic is the best place to start. They are seriously the best spider to freehandle. Out of all my T's that I do freehandle, my Avic avic is my fave to play with.

WARPIG put out a good caresheet that can be found here.

I kinda like the Eupalaestrus campestratus or Pink Zebra Beauty.
They're docile and hardy. They have hairs but hardly flick them from what I read.

I started with a Rosea (or is it a Porteri now??) and an OBT and I love it.

Just go for the one you feel you would be most comfortable and capable of keeping. Theirs a thread going on right now about ''beginner T's'' and their significance.

If you want a Metallica, then get one. As long as you know their care requirements, and how fast they are, as well as their venom potency/temperment, I'm sure you'll do fine with most any T you choose..

OK, I'm sold. I'm going to give the Avic a try. Avicularia avicularia a good choice?

I recommend A. Versicolor. I think they are the prettiest Avics. I have the A. Versicolor and a A. Metallica. I do intend to get a A. Avicularia as well as a few others.

Avic Man is correct in my opinion, in that the A. versicolor is a better looking T than the A. avicularia. But the A. avicularia is a great choice for a first T.:)

Above all, I recommend the awesome Euathlus species. These things aren't so well known - yet. I predict they'll become the G. pulchra of the hobby... They're bulletproof in terms of care, are incredibly mellow and friendly, and come in several pretty colors - red patch, yellow patch, blue and green femur. Here's an example of a small one:

kenthebugguy.com carries them. One of my favorite tarantulas - much more interesting than a moody G. porteri or G. rosea, methinks.
