What do you think of this enclosure?

Hey guys, I just finished making an arboreal sling to juvie enclosure with a backdrop like Rob C makes. Measures about 3.5" x 3.5" x 7.5". Made the backdrop with styrofoam, non toxic styro glue and eco earth. Let it dry for a couple of days. Glued in a piece of bark and I think it looks pretty nice. So let me know what you guys think. I know its a little overboard for such a small enclosure but I wanted to try out a backdrop on something small before I make a big one.

I like tinkering and making enclosures too, its my "leave me alone and zen" time when no one bothers me and i like figuring out how to make most out of the cheapest supplies or things i get for free. Those look great and i bet there were cheap to make to boot great job imo

Nothing "overboard" about it, it looks great! The only suggestion I would make is either ad a little substrate to the bottom or let the backdrop go a little further down when you make another one, It is quite inspiring , great job.

there is a P Regalis sling in it, its in the top right corner of the enclosure in the first picture. Yeah I made the backdrop shorter because I glued it to the top half on the enclosure but for sure I will make it longer on the next one. Overall since I already had the bark and eco earth it cost about $10 to make.

Of course I go through all this effort to make a nice arboreal enclosure and my P. Regalis started to make a burrow last night

I hear that's common. It should be perfect for an avic though.

If I had an avic I would, my P. Regalis is the only arboreal I have

I still think the enclosure looks awesome, especially for my first one

Just bought some regular styrofoam at michales and they also had this non toxic styro glue so I used that. For bigger backdrops I would recommend silicon based non toxic caulk.

Looks great and a novel idea for such a small enclosure. :)

I only have a couple things to mention about it.

1. The enclosure would work better for an Avicularia species, because it would actually web up near the top. Your P. regalis is most likely going to want to make itself a dirt curtain tent on the underside of that wood. That means anytime you have to open the enclosure you will be tearing its home apart. Flip it around and then the small lid is on top, where it will most likely not be trying to build a home. We did so in 2 cubes for our P. regalis sling and it worked well. We never had to worry about destroying its home, which made it want to remain in its home when we opened the enclosure. ;)

2. The bark/ wood you are using will most likely mold if it is constantly on wet substrate, or 'misted'. Since the sling must be pretty small with the dimensions of the cube vs. sling in corner, it will need some humidity and that might not be a good thing for the wood. A little mold doesn't hurt anything, but to have something constantly moldy isn't a great idea IMO. If you keep the sling like it needs to be kept, I am pretty certain that will happen from the look of the wood. We have tried wood of all types, but cork bark or plastic(I hate this) is best until they can be kept drier.

3. I can't tell if the angle of the shot that is messing with me, but if the ventilation holes are bigger than the T's head; it can escape and it appears as though they might be.

Just my 2 cents! :)

If I had an Avic I would put it in there, But I took the regalis out because I noted the vent holes being big, I am gonna put it back in the next time it molts. As for the bark, I have had problems with it molding but I will be picking up some cork bark in the next couple of days, it was just a temporary thing, Thank you for the input though.

Well, now you have a reason to get one! ;) We have bought 2 Avicularia species to put in a specific enclosure, but it is really only suitable for that genus.

No problem, but it looks as if you figured things out just fine. :)

The only thing I can think of for the lid/ destruction of its home problems, is to put clear packing tape on the inside of the holes that would be under the dirt if you flipped it. We have used clear packing tape in this fashion. It would make it more suitable, but I am unsure how far your spiffy background goes......
