My puppy was acquired from craigslist (i consider her a rescue, they were going to the pound if no one adopted), and the owners told me she was a jack russel chihuahua mix. She is 4 and a half months old, and a little over 9 pounds. Here are a few pictures of her, what breed do you guys think she is? Mom and dad seemed big for jack russels, so Im thinking rat terrier or something like that...

coloration looks similar to a rat terrier but you never know. genetics can do weird stuff:} i wouldn't say she looks to big to be a jrt but she does look a little too leggy for one. of course that could be the chihuahua shining through too:rolleyes:

lol, thanks! She is a terror, and I think she knows she's cute :p Her parents seemed big for JRT and chihuahua...so who knows!

well, i have 2 chihuahuas and one is 5 lbs while the other is around 10lbs. i've also seen chihuahua mixes up to around 15. jrts on the other hand are supposed to weigh between 14 an 18 lbs so you never know...

i just hope, for your sake, that she calms down as she gets older... my australian cattle dog is the calmest of my 3 and if you've ever met one you'll know that's not saying much. at least they keep me on my toes:D

I can see characteristics of both breeds in her. She's got the wider jaw muscles of a JRT with the ears of a Chihuahua, although they're not up, yet. I can see how she could easily be mistaken for a Rat Terrier, though. It's funny how dog genes combine and re-combine, especially in mixed breeds. I've been fooled more than once into thinking that a dog was a purebred American Pit Bull Terrier, when it in fact had no "bully" breed in it at all! I once visited a home who had a dog whose father was a purebred Dalmatian and whose mother was a Lab x Boxer cross. I would have sworn the dog was an APBT, since it looked just like one of mine! If I can be fooled, someone with decades of experience with that breed, how easy would it be to fool someone with little knowledge of these dogs? I've also seen known mixes of Siberian Husky, German Shepherd and Collie that certainly looked like high-content wolf-dog crosses, so looks can be really deceiving when it comes to guessing dog breeds.

That is insane! I can never see the chihuahua in her, but I don't know much about that breed. People always ask where I got my little min pin, and I've seen a min pin that looks JUST like her. Plus, the people I got her have another ad on craigslist, still trying to sell dad, and apparently they got one of her litter mates back who is now pregnant, which I didn't even know was possible....they are now marketing them as rat terrier chihuahua mixes as well. Oh the confusion!

Hard to tell without seeing the parents, looks like rat terrier tho.

Never know, we have a chocolate lab that isn't even fat, just large and he's almost hit the 200lb mark.

Size doesn't necessarily mean anything, "badly bred" (ie random backyard breeding and/or puppy mills, or possibly people breeding puppy mill dogs and selling them to other backyard breeders, etc) dogs can be pretty well outside the breed standard.
