It seems I've accrued 5 of them and never followed anyone. What does it do?

I believe it notifies you when someone you've followed posts something. Im technically following two people but neither of them have been on in like two years at this point.

I believe just when they start new threads or post reviews and media items, not every comment on posts. I haven't used the feature in ages and it's possible they've changed it. Let me test it by following someone.

If you are using a Desktop version you get to see the "Members online" box on the right, and people you follow pop up above the rest, which helps in seeing if they are online and available for personal messages, some things are best discussed in person.

You do not get notifications about their posts.

I believe that as followers they hang on your every word and consider you their leader. Throw them a bone every once in a while, such as a compliment, to keep them happy. Spout jargon and mumbo jumbo you think they will like. Keep them interested. Once you really have them ask them for things, such as money or that special tarantula you have been wanting.

I think that's how it works.

I'm one of your followers. I'm new to the site but I get a notification when those I follow post to the forums. I'm still not entirely sure how it all works, but it seems to alert me about posts on the "other spiders" forum. This site is largely focused on tarantulas so I follow those that post regularly about jumping spiders and provide good information, like you. I also follow people so that I can remember the people that have helped me in the past in case I have more questions as well as those whose spider stories I'm interested in so I can stay updated on how their pets are doing.

I understand followers better now. I would have edited my last post but it expired. You don't get notifications on the bell icon for followers but when you click on "news feed" you can see updates on everyone you follow.
