Anything that they can burrow in will suffice. Zilla petstore products are expensive but pretty good quality; almost anything that you can buy in a petstore you can also find at home improvement stores for more than half of the cost for a much larger quantity.

Best coloubrid ever!
As has been stated, they like to burrow so try and avoid the reptile carpet if you can(although that can work if you offer a hide).
I would definetly go the aspen route.

Pics please :D

They will really do well in any substrate, as long as they can burrow as mentioned before. Just be sure it is feeding properly, some Heterodon can be difficult feeders. I've known some WHS to be difficult feeders as hatchlings but take mice readily as adults and also WHS that were crazy feeders as hatchlings but not so much as adults. If you have any issues just post up and someone will help you out with some feeding ideas. And ofcourse I am sure someone will say "I never had an issue with my WHS" which is typical, but I have seen it first hand on numerous occasions over the years. WHS are just simply the easiest Heterodon/Leioheterodon to get to eat rodents without much issue. Hope that helps

Yeah like the dude above me said, feeding can be tricky. They like to eat frogs/toad in the wild, so sometimes you have to rub a toad on the pinky for the first few feedings. Just keep the toad frozen between uses so you can use it over and over.

Sorry to get off topic, but just wanted to give you that little peice of advice.

I use the Carefresh bedding, though aspen would probably be cheaper.

I prefer Aspen Chip over shredded aspen. My burrowing snakes do really well in it. The great thing is you can feed in their enclosures as the pieces are so small there is no great threat of impaction. Which is really helpful when you have an ambush predator like a sand boa or hognose who like to strike from under the substrate.

Ha I just realised that was you that posted this about the WHS that I gave you Ant! I feel like an idiot now. And I gave it to him because he is helping me take care of my Zoo while I am trying to get into a new house, so again thanks a bunch man you have no idea how much this helps me out right now!
