weird fly

I found this weird fly by my porch light. Thought it might be interesting to some of ya. It's the size of a paper wasp too. I've seen other mimics but not this one around here.

I want to say I have heard of that kind of fly before, something to do with it living in or around oak, hrm. must google

Physocephala tibialis ((possible family? dont think this is the exact fly))

OK thanks, I might try it with the site, I used it once before with another insect and whatever it was stumped the site, which is unusual. I still don't know what that other thing was.

it ALMOST looks like a queen ant/wasp. totally clueless!

a joke about big things in TX seems too easy =P



that is pretty wild looking, man! bugguide is pretty great, for sure. a lot of really knowledgeable ppl seem to like to help out on there

I used one of those sites one time but I can't remember which one it was, I may throw it on bugguide later, or both.
