I recently cam across a spider using a floating leaf to balance the structure of it's web. I was just wondering if this is common thing. Personally I have never seen this as the leaf was just floating and had the perfect weight to keep the web stretched out. The web was also across two trees very far apart. Just for d it fascinating and didn't know if this was rare or not.

Yes, it can happen, be a common occurrence. I could play the role of biology professor here and ask you why I can make that statement.
- No prefrontal cortex. They can't calculate consequences of their actions. It's all about the here and now, works or doesn't, without the higher order brain.
They do however have a limited learning ability. Through trial and error then can develop synaptic connections and neural pathways. Unlike higher order thinking these pathways are more like traffic lights giving yes and no.
