I grabbed the nest in the above pics, I glued it to the farthest corner from the entrance so I could do things in the cage without upsetting them. I fed the adult crushed berries and honey and put live bugs for them to chase for their babies. I found that as long as they have a nest they are pretty laid back and don't really try to escape. Also they would leave me alone when my hand was in there as long as I made no fast or jerky movements. Go slow and they will be your friend. And make sure the nest is ON Top like in my pics. To glue it like that first chill the workers for two minutes and move them into a seperate container. Then lay the cover flat on something and glue the nest in the desired location. Support the nest with something so it does not flop to one side. After the glue dries you can put the adults back with the nest after chilling them again so they are easier to work with. Be sure not to chill them to much or they will die. Also notice the nest is BEHIND the way in which the small "portal" opens, this prevents an escape as long as you are on your toes.(They have to walk farther to reach that opening giving you that extra second you need to keep them contained)

I KEPT them indoors. Remember they died, these pics are a year and a half old. Also pay attention to what they tell you, their are times when you have free reign(sp) in their cage and other times when you should just leave them alone. Make sure to get the biggest KK you can find, they like the room.

I once found a yellow jacket in winter just walking along the ground. It's wings were fine, but it was unable to fly. I kept it the whole winter, feeding it honey/water mix, maple syrup/water mix, and some coke or pepsi. It was very tame and would come right up to the water dropper which I used to feed it. I let it go early spring when the weather started to get warm, it flew away.

You say that Bald Face are your fav. of the US Hornets. I used to like them a whole lot more but I was stung prety good when I was a kid. Ended up with 64 stings. Talk about a sore body for days. But thay are a great species.
