Was this an aborted egg sac?

Hey all!

Here is the thread w/ the pics of the spider:
http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/showthread.php?t=60960

I don't have pics of nothing but the spider that produced it. I have had this spider since 10/05, and it has molted once. It eats well, and is really nice looking! It is SUPER fast though, faster than any T that I have. I think someone on here said it was a "Dolomedes" species.

Anyway, last night, I was checking on her, and I seen a dime sized pile of yellow goo under her. I looked very closely, and it looked like 100's of eggs.
It was as yellow as a banana. I got it out w/ the tweezers, and threw it away.

Here is my question....is she grieving? Is she depressed? Sad, b/c she hasn't been able to have babies? It really makes me feel like it is time to let her go outside. I feel like I am giving her a miserable life. She just looks pitiful in there. I'm afraid I am going to go in there and see her balled up dead, b/c she had no will to live.

If I let her go, would she be alright out there, since she has been in captivity and taking it easy for the past 6+ months?

Thanks for the opinons in advance....

Do you know what eggs look like? You could have thrown away some non-fertile eggs. I dont think spiders have the capacity to grieve. Sometimes when you take a sac away from a female she will ball up some substrate and care for it instead, but i think that goes on teh side of instict than grief. Abortions are natural if the mother is not getting enough to eat, where the mother basically uses the egg nutrients to feed herself because if she lives she can breed again. She may have picked up on the "scent" of a male which triggered her to make a sac. I would let her go unless you can find a male for her. I dont think they can "lose the will to live", their brains just are not that complex, and be careful about putting human emotions to other organisms. It is foolish to think that all species think and feel as we do. On the other hand, it is foolish to think that what one species feels or experiences, we can feel too, so it isnt a one way street :)

Yes, I know what eggs look like. My T's have had egg sacs, and I have kept quite a few wolf spiders that had egg sacs. These eggs were unfertilized, and were just in a drop of yellow goo. She wasn't holding on to them. There was no sac. Just the eggs. Her abdomen is pretty plump, and she is fed a nice sized cricket once to twice a week. So I think she is getting plenty to eat.

I know it isn't wise to invest feelings in them (spiders). I just can't help but wonder. But I do agree w/ you that is it time to let her go. And I will do that this afternoon :) And I hope she has a great summer!!!

Thanks for the reply though :)
