My daughter raised a male chinese mantid she found in the yard from about 1". He molted out as an adult about 3 weeks ago. Last week we found a mature female in the yard. We fed her a couple roaches so she looked plump. Today we let them both go on my daughter's window curtain. This is what we found a couple hours later.

It may not be completely clear, but the male mantis has no head. The next AM, there was just a couple legs and a piece of wing left. We put the fat female back into her container to wait for an ootheca.

i think i read that in some mantids there is a ganglion that drives the males to mate constantly located in their abdomen or thorax... and another that inhibits reproduction in their head... so when they female eats their head only the MATE FOREVER signal is left... so they do :)
