Yesterday I saw an aquarium designed to look like a large framed picture for your wall. it was flat, 12 and a half gallons and had a frame..included a filter and light.
It appeared that it would be very very cool to have, but I am sure that it is extremely heavy. i was wondering if anyone had any experience with this. I am tempted to get one after the holidays, but I wonder how difficult it would be to hang and maintain. At 200 dollars, I would hate to get it and not use it.

If I understand your descripton, it's a tank with normal hight and width, but the depth is very short, a couple inches or so? So it's flat?

I'm going to guess that such a tank will be nearly impossible to maintain. Those types of dimensions would insure that the tanks temps would fluctuate rapidly, which would be very stressful for most fish. Also, the limited surface area will drastically limit the number of fish that could live in it. It might be suitable for small and hardy fish like a Beta or some guppies, but that's about it.

On annother note, I've always though it would be interesting to house burrowing tarantulas in a narrow tank like that. You'd be able to see right into the burrow!

Yes and no. I think you mentioned that idea to me when I was visiting and I actualy went ahead and did it to some degree when I returned. You can see my H.lividum burrow quite clearly, but there is so much silk that you can only see the burrow -- never the spider.

Cheers,

i did a little researching on the net..

and the dimensions for one of the tanks I looked at was only 2 1/2 " wide!!
What would fit in that? a guppy?
They look really neat, but it would be cheaper to get one of those "fake aquariums " with the plastic floating fish and hang it up on the wall.
Though, I did see a coffee table aquarium that would be really cool. And those would be neat with a burrowing T...a big one in it.

That's usually what happens when they just happen to burrow against the glass, too. I guess they eventually get sick of the light and try to block it out.

I did try something recently (inspired by one of the diagrams Martin posted awhile back). I had these two tall but thin aquariums. I used a 1x2 piece of ferring stip and placed this vertically against the glass and packed peat moss around it. Then I removed the 1x2, leaving a tunnel against the glass. I then introduced the tarantulas (C. marshalli and an unidentified Asian). So far, they've both moved into the pre-made tunnels. Although they've used silk to sore up the soil sides, they've left the glass relatively clear. How long it will last, time will tell.

Water weighs aprox. 9.5 lbs per gal. x 12.5 =118.75 lbs. plus the tank. :D
