I don't really like them because they feel fake. (When a 'photo-tank' is used, I mean). A little better is spider-on-a-lawn, but that doesn't exactly look very natural

Also, the "fake tank environment" could well be more stressful for the spider with the additional wrangling involved?

no, arboreal spider on nice peice of corck will do it for me.
i don't use tanks for pictures.
