Hi, I've had Caraxes the vinegaroon since early November. He is a little under an inch from pedipalps to tail tip. Since then, he has been very active and eating well. I feed him twice a week with one-two crickets/dubia/mealworms each meal. He lives in a 16 oz deli cup. He has over 2 inches of substrate (eco earth/sand/sphagnum moss/crushed leaf litter mix), a tiny seashell water bowl that he constantly fills with dirt, and a piece cork bark that he has made a cave under with multiple openings, but has never sealed off. He digs small burrows against the side of the cup, never longer than his body length, and never with a proper chamber; he just starts the stops. I keep the soil moist enough to hold it's shape without being wet, and I have other burrowing animals that use this same substrate just fine, so he should be able to make one easy.

I was told he would go inter hibernation in December, but he has shown no signs of getting sleepy. What gives? Am I doing something wrong? Or is he just taking his time?

Picture of his enclosure with him in it, didn't want to open the lid and disturb him. Caraxes.jpg

It may or may not hibernate for environmental cue reasons or individual behavior. Out of my 11 two did not burrow until around in June and stayed out eating all last winter compared to the giver 9 who burrowed and sealed themselves away in October last year and this year! As long as it is eating and acting normal then it’s not so much of a concern if it burrows or not.
It will burrow and seal itself off when it’s ready to likely not before that. Until then wait!

it’s eating and digging that’s good normal behavior nothing to worry about!

Also I would remove its water dish I have found young Thylings can and will drown themselves in water dishes as shallow as 1/4 inches which happened to me. Once they are older/larger they seem to not have that risk.
