Hey guys, I'm new to both this site and keeping large arachnids, this is my first vinegaroon, she's a good bug, she ate well, looked healthy, I bought her at my local pet store back in April, and she was doing really fine, I gave her 7 inches of soil, water, and everything (I did as much research I could on their habitat and environment) and at the beginning of July, she sealed herself inside her burrow and hasn't stepped a foot out since, she dug enough near the front to where I could see her, she just sits there, doing nothing, and she's gotten really plump too, should I be concerned about a possible pregnancy? How do I take care of the hypothetical offspring?

Hello! Welcome to Arachnoboards and to the Thelyphonida hobby!!

So first off the behavior you have described is totally normal, out of the 10 Thelyphonids I have 8 are below ground right now, very plump, waiting till they molt. Yours could be doing the same. They have short windows of activity and stay underground, pretty much, most of the year. As normal as it gets for Thelyphonida.

Second is your vinegaroon a Mastigoproctus spp? What was it sold as? And then also how large is it?

On to your other concern, sometimes wild caught female adults do come in pregnant, if that’s the case just a fair warning their survival rates from being collected while pregnant tend to be much lower and are quite sensitive to being disturbed and environmental conditions, the stage of producing offspring also makes a difference. Just be prepared for that outcome! I don’t want to lie to you, but WC pregnant females don’t have great survival rates.

If that is the case and you end up seeing a brood sac explused and it carrying it you want to basically make sure it stays moist and do everything possible to leave it be with as minimal disturbance and as dark as possible too as humanly possible. The fact that it is underground and sealed away is a good thing if that’s the case.
This process is a rather long one and it the female were to give birth it would be quite some time, many months, before the thlyngs could be be seperated and fed. I’ll be happy to help where I can and you can always mention me in a post or PM me for help of that is the case.

Hope this helps calm some nerves about it being underground, and the info I provided is not to alarm you or cause additional worry but you should just be aware in case so you can provide the optimal care in those situations to help it.

Gratefully,
