I’ve seen diy fruit fly recipes and they almost always seem to add in oats and/or vinegar. What’s the purpose of either one, and is it possible to create a culture without using them? Also, is it possible to use baker’s yeast(the one that comes in the little packets) instead of brewer’s yeast?

The vinegar is for mold prevention.

I haven't had any issues with baker's yeast (knock on wood!), but I do still include the vinegar to help keep the mold down.

Oats are just a source of starch (=sugar). can use wheat germ, cornmeal, oats, or a mix. Baker's yeast and brewer's yeast are the same species (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) but have been bred to act slightly differently. Sort of like hounds and shepherds - both are dogs, and the same species of animal, but one has been bred to hunt and the other has been bred to herd and protect. It doesn't matter which yeast you use.

I have been making fruit fly cultures for a couple of years now to feed my dart frogs. I have tried applesauce, instant potatoes, powdered milk, oats, bananas- the list goes on. Then I discovered a fruit fly media called Superfly manufactured by Repashy. After using the Superfly mix for more than 8 months now, I have not had a single issue or problem with my cultures. Just add hot water to the mix, stir and let it cool down before you add the excelsior and seed the culture with flies. Very affordable and it does not develop a funky "fermented" odor either.
