Hello Everyone thanks for letting me join! Much to the horror of my friends I am getting a monster as in the post title. I read that potting compost or soil would be a good substrate. I like the idea of soaking one corner to maintain humidity levels. One thing I have noticed is that a lot of these compost mixtures have a growth medium in it. I assume that would pose an issue? Great for bigger plants but not sure about peds. What do you think?

You're not getting a monster. You're getting a beautiful invert. There's a dedicated section for centipedes and millipedes so hopefully a mod will move this.

You are absolutely right though regarding substrate. You need to make sure there are no additives. Personally I use moss peat but top soil would work just as well. For pedes I stay away from eco earth and the like as in my experience it tends to mold.

You want a damp, NOT wet substrate. A water dish that needs to be full (pedes dedicate quickly) and some cork bark for the pede to hide under if he/she chooses to not burrow.

Soil is iffy. A lot of common soils will contain fertilizer or manure. My favored commercial substrates for pedes or really any invert are those tropical rainforest mixes you can get at PetSmart. ReptiSoil and similar. Usually they're mixes of peat, sand, and less amended soils that are suitable for frogs (if it's safe for amphibians, it's safe for pretty much anything). Beats coconut fiber in every way save for cost.

You could replicate your own mix with peat moss from the store, but not worth the effort for one pede I imagine.
