So my girlfriends cat that i am very fond of isnt doing so well. This is a 16 year old female indoor cat that has been very thin and frail for many years. In the last few months shes lost even more weight, two months ago she had a cyst on her chest that was tiny like the size of a pea and in a short amount of time it has increased to the size of a large strawberry, she also smells very bad now.

The consensus among her owners is that she probably could not survive anesthesia or surgery to remove the cyst because shes so old, small, and frail, even the stress of bringing her to the vet could be too much for her. I need some advice about whether she should be brought to the vet in her state and what should be done.

I would atleast attempt a trip to the vet. im sure the cyst could be lanced without anything more than local anesthesia, but if shes smelling bad and losing weight rapidly it just might be her time has come. id definitely attempt the vet trip. theres quite a few around so even if the closest is not the regular vet its still a shorter trip. please keep us updated.

Please take her to the vet to end her suffering. That is the kindest thing you can do for her at this point. If she in incurable, it is time to let her go. I'm so sorry. I know where I live there are vets that will make a house visit to put your animal to sleep in the comfort of your home. Perhaps you could call and inquire about that.

Bad smell can be a sign of kidney failure. Kidney failure is the most common disease and cause of death for older cats.

From the sound of it, yes your cat is getting very old and I would advise a check-up. It is much much more pleasant both for you and the cat to maybe let go beforehand than having the cat die at home without aid. I know because I've been there recently. I know how it feels to lose that sort of friend.

I wish you all the best.

I'd get the cat to the Vet or ask them to make a house call. Our cat looks underweight too and we are going to ask the vet what we should do.
