Had my little versicolor out not too long ago and my friend and I were admiring her new colors after her last molt. Everything was going great she was roaming around nice and calm on my hands and arm. I put her up next to my friend so she would crawl on his shirt and as soon as she got near it she bolted in the opposite direction and hid on my lap.{D We both got a kick out of it and said that she hated the bright orange sweater. I know it's probably not the case since they don't see very well but we still thought it was cute.

Anyone else have experiences with your T's "reacting to color"?

Clearly you did not think this statement all the way through.
You do know your coming off racist right?
Maybe it's just how I am perceiving your statement.

Aside from the previous comments, I think T's do react to certain colors. I notice that when I wear a bright colored shirt like, white for example. My window have no curtains so the sun is always shining. When I walk by with a white shirt it gets real bright, trust me and some T's will dart back into their holes. I just blew off the color thing, and just went "Eh, bright shirt, photosensative T's, big deal..."

i've read somewhere that arboreal Ts have better eyes than other Ts. It should explain why she reacted, or maybe she didnt like the "touch" of the shirt... humn... :)

I don't think Ts react to color at all. At least not from my experience.

Yeah, arboreals do have better eye-sight than other T's. At least for movement I think. Perhaps she didn't like the feel of the fabric under her foot and that's why she bolted. But it's still funny to say she "hates" certain colors. It's my justification for giving her more personality than is possible for a T:eek:

Interesting, and it would make sense...

Well, it seems that you would know!

But I have often wondered about sight in general, and color vision in particular, in T's. I began with the latter, as my oldest spider is a GBB (7 year-old MF) with all those gorgeous colors. It is hard to think of an evolutionary justification for them off hand--possibly aposematic?--but only, maybe to remind rodents that the T's have urticating hairs?--because surely the T's aren't poisonous or imitating anything that is...Mate attraction? Hardly likely for something nocturnal...

Secondly, I am currently raising a small but diverse group of slings and they differ SO much in behavior. And one in particular, the Nhandu vulpinus, almost seems to hunt by sight...whereas most of the others wait for prey to wander w/in "sensing" distance...

Thirdly--orange is sort of the "universal" warning coloration in many diverse taxa. Again it's hard to imagine why a basically nocturnal animal would respond, though...Although the Schultzes report T activity on overcast days, which are still quite bright, relatively...

Fourth--wouldn't it be cool to devise some sort of experiment here? :)

I think it's likely that the T was reacting to your friends nervousness at the prospect of handling the T. They're pretty sensitive to how calm you are (or aren't) and seem to react accordingly.

As for the racial question (yes, i'll jump in, it's a whole new world now w/ pres Obama, right?) I think that what clam has observed is a true trend. I have plenty of black friends ranging from the stereotypical "gangstah" type brother to very Bryant Gumbel type folks and not one of them has any interest in exotic pets at all. Keeping herps or inverts just isn't something I see the AfrAm community doing very much. Who knows why? Cultural differences I guess. So if you've never been exposed to something like that, obviously you'll be a little more hesitant... I don't think that's at all racist but if anybody disagrees I apoloqize in advance.

im with you etown. Well but we could actually (ppl who have some Ts) try out putting them on a X color T-Shirt(Tarantula shirt? hahaha) and see what happens depending on the color? Oh and the material should be the same too.

Who is up for it? xD
