Biggest I have seen here in the states are probably a nephila from Florida and the fishing spiders in north Wisconson[dolomides I think] both have a body from 1-2" and a 3-4" legspan

a little more

I have seen many argiope here in Michigan and in Florida , while they get a pretty big abdomen they cannot compare to a large nephila . They could aproach the weight of a nephila. keep in mind that argiope makes a web with a stabilementum [spelling sorry] and this web can be three feet across. Golden orb spiders [nephila clavipes] make an orb with the top half cut off and 3-4 ft of bottom orb and the lines that hold this all togethre can be10ft or more.
The dolomides probably do not get as heavy as A.A. but bigger leg spans are the norm. Pretty neet seeing these guys with legs stretched across the water on the Peshitigo river in Wi.

spider size

Depending on a variety of factors can determine the size of a spider. Availability of food, climate, natural selection, etc all play a part in the size of a spider. The argiopes, nephilas, and dolomedes are all large spiders. If you are including legs to the overall length it would be between nephilas and dolomedes. My personal opinion would be nephila as the genus as a whole is quite large.
