Awhile back, in May, I had a surprising find in an empty house after being called out by the woman who was cleaning it for a realty company to get a snake out of the bathroom. Based on her description, I was 100% certain I'd be picking up a Corn Snake, which are common in this area, but found instead an emaciated three-foot-long Brazilian Rainbow Boa. Apparently it had escaped from the previous occupants of the house, which is in a rather "seedy" part of a small town, sometimes before they moved out in March and had been somehow surviving in this empty(other than mountains of trash and lots of mice)house since them, probably on whatever mice it could nab.

Anyway, he(pretty sure it's a male, though I have not probed it)has picked up some weight, and after a somewhat shaky start, is now taking frozen-thawed mice at least once per week. He just went through a shed, so most of the nicks and scars that he had when I found him are disappearing, and the color is AWESOME. He's still got a ways to go, insofar as his weight, but I don't want to push him too hard and cause him to start to regurg or put on weight TOO fast, since I have seem some Rainbows that were just disgustingly obese at reptile shows. When I got him, his color looked dark to me, but at the reptile show this weekend, there were many Brazilian Rainbows, and I'll stack his post-shed color up against any of the ones I saw; in fact, he actually is redder than most of them, which are more orangish looking. His iridescence cannot be beat, that's for sure, although it is very hard to capture with a camera. That "bling-bling" seems to really mess with the lens, sometimes, like photographing a sheet of glass, almost.

He is a great little snake, very calm and friendly, and he will stay around my neck 24/7 if I let him, never trying to go anywhere else. I can just go about my business, feeding the dogs or vacuuming the floor or washing and folding clothes, and he's right there. Here are a few updated pics of him-you might wanna put on shades to look at some of them, lol-to show how much he's come along since I found him.

Babies that had recently been born and just started feeding were going for around $150.00 each at the reptile show I attended this past weekend, with adults going for more, and the better the color, the more expensive the snake. I saw a lot that were more of a tannish-orange color, not the more reddish color that mine has. There were quite a few of them there, actually. I heard a lot of people asking vendors if those would bite, and most of the sellers were quite frank in telling them that "most Brazilian Rainbows are snappy". That's one of the reasons why I never actually bought one, and when I found this one, I was really expecting to get bitten when I picked him up, but he's never even offered to bite. One of the vendors/dealers I know quite well had several for sale, and he said he never handles them without a snake hook or tongs and described them as almost as bad as Amazon Tree Boas about biting. He much prefers the Colombian Rainbows, which lose their pattern and are pretty much a solid chocolate-colored snake by the time they are adults, due to their milder temperament. The way he puts it, "if you want a snake to hold, get a Colombian; if you want one just to look at, get a Brazilian". I guess I got lucky in two respects, finding the snake in the first place(though HE was probably the luckier of the two, given that I doubt he'd have made it much longer), AND having it be one of those rarer docile individuals.

That is one gorgeous (free) snake! Especially in the natural sunlight, it really brings out the colours. Congrats on saving that guy.
