Unknown garter snake

I dont have any pics as of right now but it looks like a valley garter snake(Thamnophis sirtalis fitchi). I mean exactly like it. Only thing is that it does not have the red. i have it housed with a female valley garter snake. I think it is the same species but still no red. Can any one shed some light on this cool snake?
