I was just looking at my isopod tank, and i saw this little bug in there, walking around. I killed it incase it was harmful to isopods, and i wanted to know what it is and why its in my tank. I googled and my closest idea is thrips, but i have never seen one before so i don't know if that's wrong. Im in minnesota. Sorry for the bad pics, its very small. Mostly black with some brownish/orange stripes/specks on its back. I have only seen this 1. Thankyou.

I have some springtails and i thought all springtails were white/pink? And will they eat baby isopods? I have brand new tiny baby isopods in the tank right now. Thanks for your reply!

Springtails eat decaying matter. They’ll eat dead isopods, but not live ones.
Okay thankyou! I just have never seen or heard of a black one like that, and it was pretty big for a springtail so i was making sure. Im glad its not some pest.

I hadn’t really heard of black ones either. I had to hit up the Googler. Check out those images to verify that is what you have. I sometimes get dermestid beetles in my crickets. Once I got the larvae. Some breeders keep clean up crews in their colonies and sometimes you end up getting one.

Thankyou! Yeah, i think its one of those. I have no idea how it ended up in my tank though...

Is it moist in your tank? It’s getting pretty dry out and springtails need moisture. I often find them in neighboring enclosures as well as the one I dumped the colony in. Most recently I found them swarming a bolus in an enclosure I didn’t put them in. No more bolus!
