UK Garden Spider ID plz?

Im just curious if anyone knows what these might be, I realise the picture is not the best in the world. We had a couple of these living in our porch and I just had to wash the porch down so this spider decided since his home was now gone he would try and live on me, I found him on my face and managed to brush him off without hurting him then saw him in a large puddle half dead and drowning so managed to save it from there. (This spiders not having a good day really lol) He is about size of a 50p coin, but there was another one the same which was a bit bigger who I moved to bottom of garden. They are very pretty, was toying with idea of keeping one of them but it seemed cruel. Anyway, any ideas what it might be?

it's definitley a Tegenaria sp. maybe Tegenaria domestica?

Managed to get another pic this time from the top, daft thing is still just sat in middle of my patio. If it helps at all, I have seen them attack prey in same way my T's do, sit still, wait for it to come close, then JUMP and attack it.

ye i think it's T. domestics, i get loads in my garden and my house i think they're a beautiful spider, i'd like to keep them, if i knew how.

Thanks we were sorta keeping them in our porch, I really didn't want to have to wash them away, but their webs got so big and so full of moths n shed skins it looked awfull so alas they had to go

ye it's like that in my shed hundreds of them, but i'm not too bothered by them anymore, i've seen bigger ones thn 50p though, i've seen one twice as big as that in my dads back garden, i think that was T. gigantea, but could of been T. domestica, you'll have to ask the other members, i could be a mile off lol

Well there was another one of these spiders in our porch which was twice the size at least, it was huge. We called it harry but looking up info on these spiders, think may have been a female. Its now living at bottom of our garden nice and safe, I felt so bad having to wash their homes away tho.

don't feel to bad, i suppose they will find somewhere else to make their homes , nice name for the spider when i lived in london, there was a T. gigantea in our house (it was about 3 inches leg span) and we called it boris

Well so long as it doesnt try n make a home on my face again lol.
3 inches WOW thats one big house spider, wonder how they do in captivity, hmmmm I'm tempted to try it!

i know so am i... hmm i might go out and find one i've got nothing else to do so ye i will, tee hee, i'll see if i can keep it for over a week lol.

If it survives let me know and I will try it too! I had a spider once in a pint glass on my window sill, kept it alive for about 5 months before I threw a teaspoon into sink but missed and hit the glass. Needless to say the glass broke and went into sink and the spider died. That was before I had my T's, still feel bad about it tho.

i hate it when i spider dies, i feel so guilty if it happens, i dropped a rug on a spider and it died, and i feel guilty to this day

ok I now officially feel bad. The spider I took the pics of is dead seems he roasted alive in the sun, only 1 leg is curled under, to the naked eye he looks alive and ok, but I tried moving him and no response what so ever, I feel awfull now

awww well, put him in a tub with damp towls? maybe hes dehydrated? it's very hot today in england, not sure about wales, good luck with the spider

I sadly think its way too late, I mean he is rigid as can be, feels more like a clay model than a spider now, pick him up and totally NO movement from him at all why he didn't try n find shade is beyond me. Its really hot and sunny here and he did get pretty wet, already had to save him from drowning after I brushed him off my face so combo of being wet then sitting in scorching sun I think has done him in, will go n try n put him in a glass with some damp tissue, but I don't think it will help much, will let you know if it does tho, heres crossing fingers!

awww they're such a nice species of spider too, i know not many people think so but i do (total spider fanatic)

Rest of his legs curled up as I put it in the glass so I'm pretty sure its already dead. However I did just find a little baby of same species on my door :razz: so I let that one go in shady part of my garden.

oh thats good (the baby, it's not good that it died ) i just caught a tegenaria sp. it's in a tub in my bedroom at the moment, im going to try and keep it ... alive

It doesn't look like T.domestica because it lacks the leg banding. T.gigantea maybe?
